Discrimination of real and unreal

Our entire life is all about the discrimination of what is real and unreal. In our day to day life, we believe what is real is what is seen by us out of our own eyes. What is unreal is what we recall from our past memory or future dreams. There are three stages every human being go through every day and they are called waking, dreaming and deep sleep state. In waking state, our mind is awake and projects the world for us. What we see in the world might be different than what another person sees. In dreaming state, we travel in time and distance in less than a few minutes and when we wake up that projection disappears. In deep sleep (dreamless) state, our mind is silent without any thoughts and in Sanskrit it is called “Sushupti”. We cycle between these three stages each day and there is one other state called “Turya” where our mind disappears and our higher consciousness regulate our life and dedicate the body and mind for the welfare of the fellow beings and to execute the mission of the Universal Absolute. The selfishness does not exist at this stage and as there are no thoughts, no desires or attachments at this stage. The bondage to this world created by the mind is completely eliminated.


Everything we see in the waking state is unreal. How could I think what I see through my own eyes as unreal as my mind tells me they are physical objects with shape, color and dimensions? The answer is everything that we see in this world are created with five elements namely earth, water, fire, air and ether. We call them as five basic elements from which the world is created. A composition of one or more of these five elements provides the shape, color and dimension. After sometime, these objects would disintegrate and become the respective element. For example, our body is created by five elements with thoughts of past lives encrypted on it and the vital force allows this body to individually function for a certain period of time. When various parts of this body deteriorate, the body dies and disintegrates into the five elements. Mind is nothing but bundle of desires and attachments and when we remove one after another, the mind disappears as well. If body and mind are unreal, where is the question of what is being seen, heard, touched, smelled and tasted be real? Everything in this world that we see is perishable and hence would not last forever.



We already know that what is felt in the dream state is unreal as it disappears when we wake up from our dream. Even in deep sleep state, our mind is dormant but comes back when we get back to the waking state. Besides, our body remains intact in the same composition of five elements. Other than actions that are necessary to sustain the body, everything else is suspended during deep sleep state. But still the unreal body and mind exist during this state but the stress caused by the actions of the body is eliminated. Therefore, even this state is unreal.


“Turya” state is real where our mind is completely eliminated. We realize that our frame as well as everything we see in this world is nothing but a composition of five elements created by Universal Absolute. We no longer use it for our own use and losing it does not bather us. We are firmly in a conviction that nothing in this world is going to provide the Bliss we seek (after all we never see the end to our pursuit of desires) and we cut off the ties of our attachments realizing that they are transient and unreal. We fully understand our real nature is divine and eliminate all our samskaras (encryptions of our past actions). We are no longer dependent on this world and become self-realized. We become an instrument in the hands of the Universal Absolute and all our actions become actions of the Universal Absolute with no further encryptions made into that life. In other words, what remains in us becomes real and unsullied pure higher consciousness and consciousness of this world which is unreal disappears.
