Celebrate your genealogy, as today is Roots Day. It's a great day to celebrate your heritage. Many of us are returning to our roots today, as we head home for Christmas. Returning to our roots is a warm, cozy and comfortable feeling, a sense of belonging.

A hobby and a quest: Many people get caught up, and become captivated, with researching and uncovering their family roots. It can take interesting twists and turns. We often discover we come from exciting and fascinating places. We find links to famous people in history. Sometimes, we come upon dead ends to our genealogical family tree. Other times, we find a distant relative, who has performed some of the very same research. The result of the encounter could be huge sections of the family tree, literally handed to you.

Origin of Roots Day: We all can certainly relate to the importance and the need of finding our roots. Its a sense and a need of belonging, that is ingrained in our being. So, we fully understand why this special day was created. But, we have yet to uncover the roots of "Root Day" - - who created it and when?

We will continue to dig and explore this day until we have uncovered and exposed the roots of this very special day.

    with love

ROOTS DAY

The holiday season is full of family functions and get togethers, so what better time than now to celebrate your roots! Many people go through their lives taking their family history and ancestry for granted. They don't take the time to learn about the struggles and triumphs of their ancestors and the history of their family name.
It is our genealogy that makes us who we are today. So take the time to sit down with your older relatives and talk to them about their pasts. You may hear some funny stories and learn a few things about your family that you never knew before.
Another activity you can start today is the creation of a family tree. There are several free programs online that can help you easily create your family tree. Enjoy National Roots Day!

Festivus is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23rd. It was created by writer Dan O'Keefe and introduced into popular culture by his son Daniel, a screenwriter for the TV show Seinfeld[1][2]as part of a comical storyline on the show. The holiday's celebration, as shown on "Seinfeld", includes an aluminum "Festivus pole", practices such as the "Airing of Grievances" and the "Feats of Strength", and the labeling of easily explainable events as "Festivus miracles".

Celebrants of the holiday sometimes refer to it as "Festivus for the rest of us", a saying taken from the O'Keefe family traditions and popularized in the "Seinfeld" episode to describe Festivus as "another way" to celebrate the season without participating in its pressures and commercialization.

Many Christmas's ago, Frank Costanza went to buy a doll for George.
There was only one doll left and as he reached for it, so did another man.
After struggling for the doll, he thought there could be another way.
The doll was destroyed, but out of that, a new holiday was born.
It was called Festivus. A Festivus for the Rest of Us.

    Festivus pole:
Requires no decoration. Frank finds tinsel distracting. The pole is aluminum tall, silver, hollow, long and skinny.

    Airing of Grievances:
At the Festivus dinner, you gather your family around and tell them all the ways they have disappointed you over the last year.

    Feats of Strength:
The head of the family tests his strength against another friend or family member. The great honor is given out to a different person each year. In Seinfeld, Cosmo Kramer was given the honor but turned it down to George Costanza as he had an appointment. Festivus is not over until the head of the family is pinned.

If you haven't quite had your fill of chocolate during the holidays, as today is National Chocolate Day.

As we researched this day, we were a bit perplexed. Most of us have been enjoying chocolate treats all month long. All of the holiday parties have ample supplies for chocolate candies, cookies and other treats. Christmas get-togethers and Christmas stockings have plenty of chocolate. Wherever you go this month, chocolate of some kind has been less than an arms length away.

Equally confusing is the fact that National Chocolate Anything Day occurs earlier in the month. We wonder why there are two practically identical holidays so close together.
Then the answer dawned on us...... Chocoholics! If you count yourself in this group, and we hope you do, then every day should be National Chocolate Day!

National Egg Nog Day comes but once a year. It celebrates a special, traditional holiday drink. It is consumed with or without Rum. The timing couldn't be any better-- the day before Christmas--- Christmas Eve!

Egg Nog is a seasonal holiday drink. It appears just before Thanksgiving, and is enjoyed by many at the Thanksgiving meal. Consumption then takes a break until the December holidays are in full swing. Consumption of egg nog peaks on Christmas Eve. By the New Year, it is no longer available in stores. If you want eggnog after New Year's you will likely have to make it yourself.

No one seems to know who created National Egg Nog Day. But, egg nog lovers are ecstatic that this day exists. It's loaded with stuff that tastes really good. It's loaded with stuff that's not good for you. Egg Nog afficienados will tell you that its mmmmm delicious!
The Correct Spelling: This holiday drink is spelled "Egg Nog" and "Eggnog", about equally. The carton in the store spells it "Egg Nog". Which is correct? It depends upon how much rum is in your Egg Nog! ... bottoms up!
