Thank u guys, its encouraging to hear positive feedback.:)

This particular type is done specifically on a cotton cheque cloth called gingham. The checks can be 1/8 " or 1/4 " squares.I remember wearing pink uniforms out of this cloth in school from SKumars shirtings :).

The main stitch for filling in white is double cross stitch, for others it can be double cross stitch or normal cross stitch. The one on left is simple cross stitch on blue gingham with single crochet thread (4 ply or less on 1/4 " Gingham). For smaller size squares, use finer crochet thread or strands of embroidery thread.I use yarn needle to make this type.Their are heaps of patterns on i-net and people who have shared tutorials to make this on their web blogs. My favourite ones are by 'Corgipants' and 'Laceandribbons' .
I learnt this from a lady selling this type of stitch on table cloth and she taught me when I bought one from her :).

So the only difference is the pattern style;the stitch used is cross stitch.
Their are other styles too all arising out of simple running stitch and looping inside the cross stitches.
I have still not figured out how to share links here.I can post some wherein you can find tutorials for 2 basic stitches that is used most.
