Ekadashi and Aadi Perukku fall on the same day - August 3, 2017, Thursday. And this left many Ekadashi observers facing a dilemma — to fast or not to fast?

Ekadashi Fast on Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is applicable for those who observe fast on Ekadashi days as Aadi Perukku does not prescribe to take deviation for those who observe Ekadasi fast.

Since there is an eclipse on the Full Moon Day in Aadi (7.8.2017), it has been decided by the pandits and scholars that the day has Grahana dosham and the Yajur Vedic brahmins can perform their Upakarma on Avani Full Moon Day.

So, Upakarma date for Yajur Veda has been decided as 6.9.2017.

Aadi Perukku​

Aadi Perukku is the 18Th day of the Aadi month. We celebrate the day on the banks of the river Cauvery offering mixed rice varieties like lemon rice, coconut rice to Goddess Parvathi.

It is a kind of thanks- giving festival to the rivers and waterbodies which provide water for our agricultural purposes. It is so because Aadi is the month when monsoon starts and most of the agricultural activities like plowing, irrigation and sowing take place.

It is also a fact of life. Aadi pattam thedi vidhai (ஆடி பட்டம் தேடி விதை) - this is how the saying goes.

Aadi Perukku is a day of fertility and women offer special prayers to Goddess this day. They perform abhishekam to Cauvery Amman.

ஆடிப் பெருக்கு ஆடி மாதத்தின் 18 வது நாளாகும்.

காவேரி அன்னையை வணங்கி போற்றும் நாளாகும்.

ஆடிப் பெருக்கன்று ஏதாவது ஒரு செடியை நடுவதோ அல்லது விதையை விதைப்பதோ நமது பழக்கம். "ஆடி பட்டம் தேடி விதை" என்பர். ஆடிப் பெருக்கு வளமையை குறிக்கும் நாள் என்பதால் பெண்டிர் இந்த நாளில் அன்னை பார்வதியை வணங்கி அவரின் அருளினை பெறுகிறார்கள். காவேரி அன்னைக்கு அபிஷேகம் செய்கிறார்கள்.
