thank you very much dr preethi i will take her to a doctor.
now i have another doubt she has gap between her teeth, actually her canines are missing.but the teeth are not projected. when i consulted a dentist he told me that missing of canines is not possible. but i am very sure that she had lost it ,it was her second set of teeth and when it had a slight movement she took it out by saying that it is her first teeth.we dont gave much attention on it but now it seems to be very unatractive as she is very beautiful but not willing to smile with this problem so is there any treatment for vanishing the gap.hope you will help me. take care

Oh Oh , Rechu !! Canines are the corner stones in our mouth and is responsible for the shape of the arch. As elders you shouldhave been more careful if she felt it was loose. :(

However.. have you taken an xray to rule out that the teeth present is not a canine ?? I mean sometimes the shape may have altered. In the xray you can see that canine has the longest root of all the teeth ! So first rule out wether it is actually missing.

Secondly for the gap.. if the gap is very small then she could get a composite filling for herself. It is cosmeticly very very apealing and tooth coloured.
But if the gap is too much. probably a bridge for them or laminates will be the treatment. Both of them are expensive but all worth.

I wouldnt be able to tell you what best suits her unless I see her mouth. So during your visit to the dentist ask them to take an xray and also discuss on what the Dentist suggests about the gap.

If possible PM me her teeth's photograph ( i mean the entire area that shows the gap ) . I could help your further .

Again not to worry Dentistry is so advanced and everything is possble now !! :)

    Dear
    Thanks for your help.

My front permanent teeth got inclined to oneside leaving a big gap in between the teeth. Before marriage, I was wearing clips. Later on I removed it. I also consulted the dentist, wherein they informed that I push my front teeth with my tongue, due to which the gap is created. Now I have practised myself and avoid pushing the teeth. But recently I noticed that the gap is still gradually increasing. Please help and let me know what I should do and where should I take the treatment? Please suggest and help me on this. I am currently 32 years old.

    Awaiting reply at the earliest

    Dear Hamsa ,

You said you were wearing braces before marriage. Did you go through the treatment completely ? If yes, did you have the gap before going in for the treatment as well ?
I ask this because, if you had a habit of tongue thrusting it should have been from your earlier days. Which also means while you wore the braces your Dentist must have put something called a crib ( blunt pointers made with the same material that seats behind the upper front teeth ) This would have prevented your habit and even after removal of braces.. the habit would not have prevailed. Also I assume you wore the retention appliance after your braces was removed which is for a period of 6 months or so which prevent relapse of the problem. If you havent , the treatment could be a failure.
But if you have noticed the problem after your marriage.. then it is due to other reasons.
Now how do you identify wether you actually have this habit of thrusting tongue.. ? Relax your mouth and get the lips just in contact after a swallow. While you swallow you can feel the tip of the tongue touching the upper portion of the palate ( hard surface behind the upper teeth ) . Normally the tongue should touch the junction between the upper front teeth and the palatal area. If it is sitting on the upper front teeth then you have the habit of tongue thrusting.
Now this habit usually pushes the teeth front and not away from each other.
So the gap should be related to the gums. When the gums get lose the support to the teeth misses and it tends to drift away.
This is what I feel the problem is.. Gum problems also are a result of braces treatment.
If the gap is not too wide then you could try getting it filled.. but as you say the space has been ' increasing over period " you must see a gum specialist ( periodontist ) and rule out unhealthy gums and surrounding tissues. Once the preriodontist gives a clean chit..
you could visit an orthodontist and go for a removable braces which does nothing but aligns and closes the gap.

Hope all is set right soon.. take care

    Hi there,

I read from ur revious therad replies about the solution to the gaps.

My husabnd has gaps he just pick a tooth picker after dinner :(

As u have suggested if the gap is very small then we can fo r a composite filling fwhich is tooth coloured and if the gap is too much then a bridge for them or laminates.

You've mentioned its expensive... can i know how much it would cost? does it last for ever or does we have to change it timely basis?

Currently we are at Boston USA.. do u know any dental reference here. Can u suggest any dental hospitals?

    Hi
Thanks for your advice. Before my marriage, I had braces only to align the front teeth together, since there was some gap. Though I had this tongue thrusting problem, I was not informed about the same that time and no crib was put to avoid this. Later after 10 years of my marriage, during the recent dental check up, I was told that this problem is persisting. I did not take any specific treatment for this, but I myself started practising to avoid this problem. I believe that, I have overcome this problem now. But as I said earlier, one of my front tooth has given way and moved farther thus increasing the gap. Earlier the gap was about 2mm (about 3 years back). But now has increased to about 6mm. Can you suggest any specialist at Chennai, India, so that I can undergo this treatment.

    Thanks for your help.

    Suman ,

It is like this.. laminates are indeed expensive. You must check with your Dental Insurance provider wether those treatments are covered . The cost differs from dentist to dentist. It does not have to be changed from time to time. But yes.. habits and certain restrictions may be given.
Secondly, as your husband has this habit of using a tooth pick that is causing seperation.. he must discontinue it and you could wait and watch wether it does change the gaps' size .. He could also give a little pressure and attmept to close the gaps.
Also he could also wear removable braces which is a very good treatment to close gaps and is so permanent !
If you are interested to visit an Indian Dentist.. you could get few names from sulekha or through googling.
Where ever you go.. make sure you have Dental insurance .. :)

    Dear Hamsa ,

Ok... so it is just one tooth that has drifted away. You also say that you feel you have overcome the habit. Good then. Check with a Periodontist first . I do not know any periodontist there. But you could try and meetup with one Dr. Jamuna Udhayaraja in Ayanavaram . She is a family Dentist and her hubby is an Orthodontist. She would be able to help you with a consultation with a Perodontist in her clinic.
However, I googled periodontists in chennai and found a few names. But I really do not know any of them.
But I do know Dr. Jamuna. quite well as I was her brother's colleague in Bangalore.
