About being older student: There is no discrimination, as long as you show you have used your time wisely, like working, volunteering.

In fact, medical schools now prefer older students, who bring their life experiences and new perspectives to the table.

    Hi rcbelur

Out of curiosity, by saying that you did MD, are you meaning Masters in Medicine? If so, what is the specialty that you did your Masters in? As per my limited knowledge, I thought one needs to have a basic medical degree (houseman ship and all) to get a proper MMed in his/her chosen specialty.

And are you an accredited specialist under any medical council (which is a prerequisite for practising as a specialist)?

In U.S, medical school is 4 years long, the admission to which is after completion of an undergraduate degree and pre med science courses.

M.D stands for doctor of medicine, which is a doctoral degree. In other parts of the world, MBBS is the degree at the end of medical school.

In U.S one must complete residency before practicing. Residency training depends on the specialty one chooses. It is a minimum of 3 years. One can also specialize further by doing fellowship training, duration of which again depends on the specialty.

    Hi AbhiSing,

To answer your question, yes, I did M.D in U.S, which took 4 years and am now doing residency. I am applying to fellowship which will start in 2011, at the end of my residency.

During residency training, we are not allowed to practice independently. At the end of residency training I will be board certified in my specialty and I can practice independently.

I hope that answers your question.

    Hi Revathi,

Thanks for your input. I am intrigued to know if there is any area in health care which can use engineering expertise. I don't want to be a IT consultant for any hospital. But I am looking more for a hybrid career that combines best of both worlds. Do you have any pointers on where I might be able to look for such information. For example one of my friends did a MBBS from India and then did his MBA and he ended up as a health care consultant in a consulting firm.

    Regards,
    Kavya.

    Hi All,

It is possible to combine Medicine with IT/Computer science. There are computational medicine, bioinformatics, medical instrumentation.

Knowledge is always useful. Study in any subject sharpens intellect.

    Hi Revathi,

I am really inspired by your post. I am an engineering graduate from India and I am working in IT here. I want to change my career to medical fields. Could you pls give some inputs on this? How to get started on this?
