Need information about adding spouse name in passport

Last year i went to chennai RPO to include spouse name they said for this inclusion we have to apply for new passport.So i do it in takkal and have my new passport with spouse name.In this only spouse name is added no need to change last name.For applying passport for kids its necessary.
Otherwise there is no need of it.Because i travelled as dependent without spouse name.
