Do the following points describe the behaviour of the Toxic MILS that a lot of us ladies vent about???

    • Believing that they're better than others
    • Fantasizing about power, success and attractiveness
    • Exaggerating their achievements or talents
    • Expecting constant praise and admiration
    • Believing that they're special
    • Failing to recognize other people's emotions and feelings
    • Expecting others to go along with their ideas and plans
    • Taking advantage of others
    • Expressing disdain for those they feel are inferior
    • Being jealous of others
    • Believing that others are jealous of them
    • Trouble keeping healthy relationships
    • Setting unrealistic goals
    • Being easily hurt and rejected
    • Having a fragile self-esteem
    • Appearing as tough-minded or unemotional
    Just curious...

These describe toxic PEOPLE, in general, not just toxic in-laws.

I would also add "A huge ego and a sense of self-entitlement" to the above list.

    One more point would be
Acting like royalty and expect to be treated like royalty.

That would be included under the following:

    • Believing that they're better than others
    • Fantasizing about power, success and attractiveness

Specific to Mil, they are sooooooooo possessive of their sons. I am glad my MIL is not sleeping in between my husband and I every night!

    Dear r99
It is really sad that many girls feel that MILs are all bad... I will say that I do have differences with my MIL but I refuse to have such preconceived notions about her and keep hoping that our relations will improve some day.
Also my dear mom is also a MIL but she is the sweetest most non interfering person ever.. ( and I am not just saying that because she is my mom)
    regards
    Mihika

If you have a Brother, then your SIL is definitely a lucky girl,
Non interfering MILs appear to be a rare species... Believe me, When I got Married & went out of my way to make my own mother proud of how non judgemental a DIL I cd become, Went out of my way to make myself a 'part & parcel' of my IL family, But you know what, It was complete waste of effort, To the point where I started doubting myself.
.. Until I came across this set of descriptionS, not in some flaky MIL bashing website.., but from the Mayo Clinic web page talking about MENTAL DISORDERS!! The description listed above are clubbed under a term Called NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY DISORDER classified by the DSM (The medical bible for mental health diagnosis), so what the Overwhelming majority of ladies on this site may be describing is just not based on thier immature whims... Lets not debase our own intelligence by undermining our own sense of whats right & wrong..
