Two joint accounts worked for us. One for his and one for my pay. I don’t like to use the same account to pay bills etc so I always have an intermediate account for that. We did it this way to make it easy to track things. Also, have a different credit card with him as supplementary card holder. I really go to great lengths to surprise him and then the bank or credit card transaction would ruin it. It’s not like he can’t check my accounts/cards, he has access but usually he won’t go look.
Back in India, I got to know more about banking activities only after I had individual account. I do have joint accounts with my other half but I will leave it to him if any banking related things come up. My other half wanted me to have one here in US just for the same reason - familiar with banking. This could be a point to consider but you can do the same with joint as well.
