You have brought up a nice point there - the fundamental reason that caught up with immersing idols of clay into river.

The river at its upstream goes toward and into the ocean. She meanders several kilometres before reaching into the nearby ocean. At its usual speed all her water go into ocean. But with lots of clay in her path and bed her speed is diminished in presence of clay which retains more water.

True @muggs we need to be sensitive towards our nature.... I believe that alongwith the festival its important to teach our children the reason why it was celebrated in a particular way and how we can do now....
