This afternoon I discovered that my LO has a raging case of head lice! She seems to have made the undesirable acquisition at her daycare. I looked up the possible solutions and have bought some Nix and a lice comb. I haven't applied the topical yet. I've been combing and picking lice like a great ape all afternoon (not eating them though ). Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this? How long does it take to go away? Any dos and don'ts? I have neem oil and mustard oil at home. Wondering if that will help? She is just shy of 2 years if that matters. I've been having phantom itches on my head too. I've combed out my hair a handful of times, no sign of anything so far. How do I prevent this from spreading?
We have heard from our school that several cases have been reported so we are on the watch. This link has some useful info CDC - Lice - Head Lice also, here's what the school nurse told us "It is prudent have long hair tied back and remind your children not to touch heads or share brushes, hats, etc. It is important to note that after using a lice shampoo, combing is the single, most important thing that you can do with a quality comb that has tight, metal teeth. Combing should be done diligently to prevent one nit from hatching and starting the cycle over again. Carefully combing medium length hair can take well over an hour. This is imperative to avoid the new cycle. Linens, towels, clothing all must be washed daily. Brushes, and any hair utensils need to be treated as well. " I have also heard from other moms that listerine (?!) works so google that as well. Hope you send those lice packing, they suck!
@Gauri03 I had the same issues last year with my DD (3.5yrs at that time). I took her to a lice specialist immediately and got everything combed out through them. I had a small baby in the house that time and I couldn't send her to school as they will not take her if she had lice so I just sucked up and spent the money to get it all out. It took them an hour to get all out and after that we have not seen anything back. But the we washed all bed sheet and pillow covers and sanitized the couch. Apparently I was the only one who got it from her and the lice specialist did the magic for me too. My DD hair was short at the time so it didn't take longer and it was easier for them. Make sure you sanitized anything that you think would have had any contact with hair. Good luck ! On the side: If it was a boy I would have ended up shaving the hair off as its cheaper and easier gigglingsmiley
Thanks for sharing your experience. It was reassuring. I did the Nix treatment and it seems to be working. I've been doing a lot of combing too. Have to wait a week to see if any live ones pop up again. If they do, I will surely find a specialist. My LO hasn't had her tonsure ceremony yet, so I'm considering that as a last option too.
Been there ... Usually you get it away with the lice liquid and combing. I was lucky to have blondhaired children (= easy to spot lice and the eggs). But for months I frantically searched every night. It was winter so put all pillows, cushions etc out in the cold for a day.
Dear Gauri, I would suggest a remedy for lice. This is a home remedy which is very effective and harmless. But I don't know if you will get this in USA. Take the seeds of custard apple (Sita Phal) and grind it in the mixie with little water. Then rub it on the scalp and leave it for half an hour and wash it with regular shampoo. The lice will just vanish. Not only that they do not come back for a long time. Regards Uma
Thanks. Mine has dark brown hair and a lot of it! But the Nix did the trick. We've been free of the menace so far.
Thanks! My lice problem seems to be gone for the moment. I wish I could find Sitaphal seeds in the US. I wouldn't grind them though. I would plant them! I love that fruit! Haven't had it for over a decade now. Thanks for reminding me of it. I'm going to find some seeds and grow some trees.
