Hello friends, Watched the first episode of Satyamev jayate and found it really touching and emotional! :thumbsup At least, we have a celebrity standing up for social cause openly. I am particularilt touched by the coverage on female foeticide. According to the reports, the crime is more prevalent in Punjab and Haryana. Do you also agree on the same? Have you seen any of your acquaintances or people near you doing the crime or anybody arreasted for the offence. Share your experiences here.
Hi Even though there is a big bias against the girl child in the whole of North India, things are particularly bad in Punjab and Haryana. Recently, there was a report about a doctor couple in the Punjab area who conducted abortions (they specialised in female foeticide). Where did they dispose of the foetuses-- they simply threw them in a nearby well. That is how their crime was discovered in the first place. In fact, directly because of the bias against the girl child and the female foeticide in the area, the sex ratio has become so skewed that it is difficult to find a bride for men of marriageable age especially in the Mewat area of Haryana. The men have to import brides from states like Andhra, Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Can you imagine this is modern day India!
Hi Jassi You have touched on a topic close to my heart. The female child is exposed to multiple threats to her life from her conception. I have heard of the Mewat region of Haryana. There is an entire belt alongside Rajasthan, Haryana and even some areas of Punjab. Since boys of marriageable age are unable to get brides from their areas because of the depleting sex ratio, they resort to buying girls from outside their states especially Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. These brides are called Paro. They mind the cattle, do all the housework, and bear children all in an alien land, cut off from all relatives and friends- all in exchange for two square meals a day. Actually these girls or PAROs are some sort of sex slaves. Naturally they dont ever get to inherit the land or get to enjoy the status of an official wife. They are forever the "other wife".
