    Hi ladies,

When i went for monthly scan last time...my clinic had a pamphlet showing
New Fertility Treatment Better than IVF

In-vitro maturation - or IVM - is a safer and cheaper new form of treatment which has had a 30 per cent success rate, compared to around 10 per cent with normal IVF. IVM involves the premature removal of young eggs from a woman's ovaries, which are then matured in a laboratory, fertilised and placed into the mother's womb.

The main advantage of the treatment is that the woman does not need to take artificial hormones to force her ovaries to produce eggs. Professor Bob Edwards, who helped create the world's first IVF baby Louise Brown, believes that IVM will eventually replace IVF.

It's the hormone drugs which make IVF expensive and there are suspicions amongst experts that high doses affect egg quality. IVM is an all-round cheaper solution and it heralds a new era!

Initially only women over 36 years of age with poly-cystic ovaries will be offered IVM but it is hoped the treatment will eventually be offered to all women.

I confirmed this with my fertility specialist...So those ladies who had more than one failed IVFs ...Do not worry...There is still ray of hope and light at the end of the tunnel...:thumbsup

Thanks Subha for this useful info. Many people hesistate to go for IVF is just because of its cost. If IVM is cheaper than IVF, it will give hope to most of us.

Yes...this type of treatment is available in all the cities of india...
My doctor says that IVM is "better than nature" at getting some women pregnant and does not need high doses of potentially harmful hormones. The only drug used in a cycle of IVM is a single injection of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) 35 hours prior to oocyte collection.
She says that IVM is an evolving technique with promising results which can be offered as an alternative to IVF for all infertile patients who have a high number of antral follicles and who are at an increased risk of developing OHSS.
    Summary of eligibility criteria

    • Woman requiring assisted conception treatment
    • Age <38 years
    • Polycystic ovaries on scan (doesn't matter whether periods absent or regular)
    • <3 previous failed IVF cycles
    • BMI <35: Ideally <30

    Hi twibabyhopes,

In vitro maturation (IVM) is a fertility treatment where the eggs are collected from the ovaries when they are immature and then matured in a laboratory. After maturation, the eggs are fertilized and replaced in the womb.

The procedure for IVM is as follows: Step 1. As in conventional IVF, eggs are collected, but at an earlier stage, when they are immature. This means that you do not need to take as many ovary-stimulating hormones before your eggs are collected.
Step 2. The eggs are matured in a dish placed in an incubator in the laboratory for one to two days.
Step 3. When the eggs are mature, they are fertilised with your partner’s, or donor’s sperm. Embryos are cultured then transferred to your womb, just as they would be with conventional IVF treatment.

Duration:One full cycle of IVM takes between 4 to 6 weeks – the same as an IVF cycle.
Egg collection during IVM takes around 30 minutes to an hour.

    Days admitted:
None – IVM is an outpatient procedure.

    Anesthesia:
Egg collection in IVM typically takes place under sedation and not anesthesia.

    Recovery:
IVM requires a minimal downtime of a few minutes following egg retrieval.
