11 is not too bad. Remember this is just an estimate, and values can vary from technician to technician and time to time. avg ard 23 weeks is 14. yours would have to be less than 7 or 8 to get really worried.

Drink lots of fluid and take complete bed rest. That's the key to bringing up the value. drink atleast 1 gallon a day and rest. don't lift any heavy objects either.

Amniotic fluid index (AFI) is a rough estimate of the amount of amniotic fluid[1] and is an index for the fetal well-being. It is a part of the biophysical profile.[1]

AFI is the score given to the amount of amniotic fluid (by adding up centimeters of depth of four pockets of fluid)[2] seen on pregnant uterus by ultrasound. Doctors may use this four-quadrant technique or the "Single Deepest Pocket" technique to determine the AFI[3].

An AFI between 8-18 is considered normal[4]. Median AFI level is approximately 14 from week 20 to week 35[5], when the amniotic fluid begins to reduce in preparation for birth.

An AFI < 5-6 is considered as Oligohydramnios[2] The exact number can vary by gestational age. The fifth percentile for gestational age is sometimes used as a cutoff value.[6]

An AFI > 20-24 is considered as Polyhydramnios.[2][7]

Dear Pavi,

The amount of amniotic fluid is an important indication of the baby's well being. My doctor took a class about delivery and other details during the 3rd trimester and she explained to us that the amniotic fluid is nothing but the baby's urine. The baby urinates in the uterus and that is the amniotic fluid that surrounds it.

If a baby urinates less, then there is a problem (I mean the baby after delivery) and similarly, if a baby in the womb urinates less, then it is a problem. Thats why amniotic fluid is given importance.

My SIL also had the same problem, and she was adviced glucose sachets etc. And, she delivered a full term beautiful and healthy baby. So, dont worry. Donot worry too much. And, inturn just follow the doctor's instructions perfectly and it will all get alright.

Was just reading my old pregnancy thoughts.
Lucky are those ppl whose babies can be saved. As I explained I had this low fluid issue in my 18-19 week, doctor just asked for bed rest and extra fluid. no one would believe, i drank more than a gallon a day just to save my baby.

But in my case, I blame my doctor, he was always rude,non compassionate and I am sure he didnt try to save my baby. I feel all this, coz he never did any 3D and did not put me on IV, did no regular monitoring, sent me home saying have more water and bed rest.
come back after 4-5 days.

when I went to see him, he declared that baby is not alive.
Somehow I feel, doctor knew all this would happen but he didnt save my baby.

Guys please take rest and always consult a doctor whom you can trust and who really cares for you.

I also had oligohydroamniosis(low fluid levels) during my pregnancy. I had multiple issues along with the low fluids but still managed to hold on and deliver a healthy happy baby @ 33 weeks. She is now a bubbling eight year old. From personal experience, I'd suggest, please try and sustain.
My first issue with the pregnancy was a bleeding of unknown origin at 6 weeks. I thought I almost lost the baby but somehow miraculously they found a HB and the U/S showed proper growth.
I was first diagnosed with low fluid levels right after my first trimester. The 3D U/S with a fetal specialist showed nothing wrong with the baby but then fluids were really low. After fluid consumption and bed-res it resolved on it's own in a few days. I again had low fluid levels at around 19 weeks. This time, I had to be hospitalized and put on IV. It took a week but the fluid was restored to low normal levels. The 3D U/S found nothing wrong with the baby's bladder or placenta. My body was just not making enough of fluids and I had none of the risk factors(High BP, blood sugar etc). All the tests came back normal.
I was sent home after this but had to have weekly U/S taken. At about 29 weeks, the doc found that the fluid levels were really low. They admitted me, tried to bring it up. It never reached optimum level but they kept me in the hospital and monitored me and the baby. Finally @ 33 weeks, I was induced and delivered her. Even after delivery the placenta was sent for testing but there was nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong with my baby's bladder either. They did suspect a blockage but she was out and peeing normally. I urge you to see a fetal specialist and go from there. Sometimes, no reason can be found for low fluid levels but then it can be brought back to normal levels with bed-rest or IV or a combination of both.

Low amniotic fluid at week 34?

Dear all,

When I went for my last check-up at week 31, my gynec suspected that I am small for dates. Hence he asked me for an USS on the same day, where he found out that my amniotic fluid level is little low. He didnt mention anything about the levels, didnt scare me much except asked me to take some rest, be hydrated all the time and eat well.

He asked me to come for the next check up in three weeks (at my week 34) for further details.. Hopefully he will inform everything on that day.

I did check this online and came to know so much about low amniotic fluid and the issues related to that. That really scared me lot.
I am taking full time rest since the time I was advised to do so... and i really dont know my water levels (amount) to compare this with others.

Is there anyone with this problem? Kindly share your experience with me please.

PS: He said my baby is not small and he is doing fine.
at the same time, he asked me to be cautious on its movements. Which is normal as of now

I did read a little bit about it in different forums after I heard your issue. From what I had read so far,what you can do is to take

1. plenty of rest.

2. Keep your hydrated
--->coconut water daily
--->nutritious shakes & juices(add almonds, dates, nuts)
---->Jeera water
----->lemon juice(alternate with salt/sugar)
----->butter milk

3. You also need to take nutritious small meals to improve teh fluid level.

If you were too low, Dr.would have taken some immediate action. So do not get worried. take rest and eat well.

BTW- we share the same due date..Jan 16th...You will be in fine and in my prayers to remove all complications in pregnancy.

My amniotic fluid level was low too,it was 8.1,usually it should be above 8 it seems,so I was on border level and was ordered CTG for 2 weeks to monitor the heart beat of the baby and scan was taken once in 3 days to check for levels,but the levels increased and became normal,usually in this case you may be induced at 37 weeks(37 weeks is considered full term) and the baby will be taken out,because if the levels kept decreasing there may be danger to the baby,I did one thing and it really really helped,as far as I know the reason was I was on little diet since I was diagnoised with diabetes but after I came to know about it I ate well again but went for walks after food,so my advice is increase your food intake,water intake and see if it helps,that was what really I did and it increased to normal level.Dont get scared too much,my baby was very very healthy with apgar score 8,had normal delivery too.good luck.be positive.I even had high BP and am hypothyroid and still baby was fine.dont worry.
