How to stop soil eating habit of a one year baby

    Dear Indus ar Ladies,
    My one year grandson is craving for soil,dirt.
    We are a very well to do people.We keep our baby in good hygiene .But still when the baby see dirt or soil in garden or anywhere runs there and try to eat it.If we try to stop from doing it
    starts crying very loudly.
    Please can you suggest me what to do to stop babies soil/dirt eating habit

    My daughter too had a craving to eat chalk when she was very young...we tried to stop her by pulling away her hands and scaring her telling all imaginary stories...but of no use.

    Then when we told her doctor about this habit...he said it is because of vitamin deficiency and gave her a tonic (just one bottle) of multivitamin and micronutrients.

    That habit went off as it came..unnoticed.....

    Consult her doctor about this....your problem may get solved.

    Yep, it is nutrient deficiency and is known as pica. I am guessing Iron deficiency or calcium deficiency. Please do have him evaluated and yes, please do stop him even if he does cry.

    Dear madam

    My daughter too had the habit of eating chalk when she was 2 years old...we tried pulling away her hand and scaring her with imaginary stories...but no use.

    when i consulted her doctor....the doctor said that this is because she is deficient in certain essential vitamins. He prescribed a tonic (just one bottle) which had both multivitamins and micronutrients.

    Her habit disappeared within a month....

    please consult your grandson's doctor too about this. May be he can help you...

    Hi vijaynagrani aunty,
    i second sunitha.Kids crave for soil/chalk due to vitamin deficieny. when i was a kid, i used to eat chalk..and my paed suggested me some vitamin tablets..(as my mom told) :)
