    hi,

I too have garuda puranam at home. But normally everyone say that it should not be kept at home. Out of anxiety, I read the book to some extent, but could not continue reading. Oh my God, so many crimes and so many punishments for all those crimes is given in that. It is too harsh those punishments and may be it is suggested not to keep at home and read that as it it scaring to know all those. Sorry, I may not be correct. Hope you have seen the movie "Anniyan" in which he punishes the bad persons according to garuda puranam .?

You can ask some elderly person in your family or surrounding about this.

    regards,
    anandi

    Hi Anandi,
Yes I saw the movie Aniyan, and noted the basics it follows from Garuda Purana.
I have been getting mixed views on -if one can keep the garuda puranam at home or not, some say only during funeral/death garuda puranam will be read at home thus its not to be kept at home--some say for knowledge purpose you can keep and read at home. I am confused thats why I thought i can get some light if I share my queries here.
    Anyway thanks for your response.:)

Garuda Purana is in the form of instructions by Vishnu to his carrier, Garuda (The King of Birds - a vimana of Lord Vishnu). This Purana deals with astronomy, medicine, grammar, and gemstone structure and qualities. In addition, the Garuda Purana is considered the authoritative Vedic reference volume describing the Nine Pearls, which includes not only the well known Oyster Pearl, but also the Conch Pearl, Cobra Pearl, Boar Pearl, Elephant Pearl, Bamboo Pearl, Whale Pearl, Fish Pearl, and Cloud Pearl.

Am I too late in answering this question?. Anyway, I will post the answer.

On the tenth day of the demise of someone at home, after all the rituals are done, a story will be told about what happens to the soul after the person die and a couple of chapters from Garuda puranam will be read on that day. That is the reason why people do not insist or show too much eagerness in having the book at home as it is related to some unpleasant event at home.

If some needs the answer to what happens to the soul after it leaves the body, reply here. I will reply with that story.

It is upto people to have it at home or not. There is nothing inauspicious or bad omen to have it at home.

    Dear Sir,

My grandmother passed away few days ago. we did read a shortest version of Garuda puranam during the 10 days cermony. also, we got an update from our sastrigal on the 13th day as story telling event. Please share the story that happens to body or the soul after leaving the earth. until it reaches the heavenly foot of the Almighty.

Also, if you are aware of the NITHYA SRADHAM please do let me know.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Sri.

what happens to the soul after it leaves the body

    Dear Mr. Mahalingam :

I have a doubt quite for a long time to know about our soul. Soul will take rebirth but in Muslim Community there is no belief in that. I have read Garuda Puranam recently but I am not satisfied. Can pls. explain in detail how the soul is travelling to hell or heaven means Narakam or Swargam and why we have to perform rituals for 12 days and how it reaches the ancestors. There is a mention the soul will take one year to take rebirth. Why we have to perform Abdhigam. Dhanam we give during these rituals. How it will reaches the ancestors. I am really confused.

I am performing yearly Shrardham to my father and recently my mother also passed away. It is my intention to know the basic reason as we are practically involved in these rituals.

Though I belong to Brahmin community as per my reading of available Garuda Purnam Brahmins are given utmost importance. There is also a mention in Garuda Puranam that during this Kaliyuga Brahmins will not perform their Veda Mandram properly and out of jeolous they will gain money. Do you think today the Sastrigals are doing their duty as per Veda Padashala norms. Is it correct. I am not blaming Brahmin. Don't think otherwise. The way in which they are demanding Dhakshana many poor Brahmin people are stop doing their Karma though it is not correct on their part but it is because of high and unreasonable demands from the Vadhyar.

I trust you will not misunderstand me and only on academic interest i put before you this question.

    Please explain.

    Regards,

    VKSWAMY
