It is so true about desi communities. You shake a stick at that crowd, and if what you hit is not an engineer, it is usually a doctor, or scientist. Thanks.

When I read that FDA paper I thought of "add salt to taste" funda of recipes. A medical assistant or nurse in a clinic is going to be doing the diluting, shaking and injecting. When the well shaken salt-diluted vial is inspected for its looks (should be cloudy, but not have any floating particles) to judge whether or not it can be used, I wondered if thoughts-&-prayers should come in at that cue.
Then I remembered the cloudy influenza vaccine I took in October, and mused EaswarOoo Rakshadhu [god bless us, everyone - Tiny Tim, A Christmas Carol]

Information from news outlets on the vaccines is likely followed by most of us in the house-arrest situation. I have been doing that too. I am also clicking on links I see, and navigating to other places with more information/questions. Look for something, and then that leads to another.

The early results of the AstraZenecaOxford vaccine in Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid vaccine 'dose error' explained, [apparently 1/2 the intended dose was given to a whole bunch of people in error and not by design!!] made me wonder about why the researchers were not using Statistical Design Experiments that people use to find the Optimal thing to do, when there are many variables, like age, BMI, pre-existing conditions, and so forth to arrive at the correct dose. The half-dose_full-dose two shot group got the best efficacy (90%) result, while the full-dose_full-dose two shot group got only 62% efficacy result.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine (not ready yet) is coming out with a ONE shot vaccine, that is also easy to transport, store and dispense.

Here is a youtube with useful link to find out WHEN the vaccine would be available in your location, for your background [healthcare worker, essential service workers, old people, everybody-else is the order]

Heard our medical doctors and medical residents are in line taking the shots. They have been looking forward to it. They need the protection everyday.

Only one is out of town so he has to miss it.

Information on the Moderna Vaccine from the Food & Drug Administration of USA. This is also a m-RNA type vaccine, similar to the Pfizer-BionTech vaccine we had been talking about in previous posts.

    https://www.fda.gov/media/144434/download

I read the Exec. Summary, and focussed on the adverse effects of getting vaccinated:
The most common solicited adverse reactions associated with mRNA-1273 were injection site pain (91.6%), fatigue (68.5%), headache (63.0%), muscle pain (59.6%), joint pain (44.8%), and 6 Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine VRBPAC Briefing Document chills (43.4%); severe adverse reactions occurred in 0.2% to 9.7% of participants, were more frequent after dose 2 than after dose 1, and were generally less frequent in participants ≥65 years of age as compared to younger participants. Among unsolicited adverse events of clinical interest, which could be possibly related to vaccine, using the November 25, 2020 data cutoff, lymphadenopathy was reported as an unsolicited event in 173 participants (1.1%) in the vaccine group and 95 participants (0.63%) in the placebo group. Lymphadenopathy (axillary swelling and tenderness of the vaccination arm) was a solicited adverse reaction observed after any dose in 21.4% of vaccine recipients <65 years of age and in 12.4% of vaccine recipients ≥65 years of age, as compared with 7.5% and 5.8% of placebo recipients in those age groups, respectively. There was a numerical imbalance in hypersensitivity adverse events across study groups, with 1.5% of vaccine recipients and 1.1% of placebo recipients reporting such events in the safety population. There were no anaphylactic or severe hypersensitivity reactions with close temporal relation to the vaccine. Throughout the safety follow-up period to date, there were three reports of facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy) in the vaccine group and one in the placebo group. Currently available information is insufficient to determine a causal relationship with the vaccine. There were no other notable patterns or numerical imbalances between treatment groups for specific categories of adverse events (including other neurologic, neuroinflammatory, and thrombotic events) that would suggest a causal relationship to mRNA-1273.

Stanford doctors protest, voice concerns about their place in receiving COVID-19 vaccine
Stanford has received at least 3,900 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, but demonstrators say only seven out of 1,349 residents and fellows were given the chance to be vaccinated in the first round. They understand that supply is limited, but say their frustration stems from being told that priority was given to some faculty who are working from home and have no in-person patient responsibilities.

In a statement late Friday afternoon, Stanford Health Care said:
"We take complete responsibility for the errors in the execution of our vaccine distribution plan. Our intent was to develop an ethical and equitable process for distribution of the vaccine. We apologize to our entire community, including our residents, fellows, and other frontline care providers, who have performed heroically during our pandemic response. We are immediately revising our plan to better sequence the distribution of the vaccine."
When I read about the Stanford protests couple of days ago, I thought it was sad that such a demonstration was needed for even an institution like Stanford to do the right thing, but maybe such mistakes were to be expected when there were so many layers of planning and execution involved with very little precedent.

Then today I was talking with an acquaintance who is a founding member of a medium size desi non-profit. His annual 1-1 call to long time members. Casually he says that his wife, a retired physician, got the vaccine. I asked how come as she doesn't practice any more. He said two hospitals at which she used to practice got in touch and said come take the vaccine. I asked why didn't she decline (just in mid-60's and healthy). He was taken aback at my question. And plainly surprised.

    Oh well.

But if one has to go by the current scenario in UK and Bengaluru, mankind has to discover another vaccine to escape from newer stronger strain of COVID.
