All sounds cannot be called music. But definitely all music is a cluster of sounds.
It is the minute 'gap' between sounds that creates music. When sounds are put in harmony, it is music. What is harmony? It is 'silence' between two sounds. The sound creates a 'depth' to the 'silence' and 'silence' creates a depth to the
' sounds'.So 'silence' and' sound' start interplaying with each other to form a symphany called MUSIC.Depending on the intervel of silence and the impact it creates on various types of sounds , the whole world of music is created -

Madam Srama has beautifully dealt with many aspects of silence and how she was able to enjoy and appreciate.
No doubt silence helps a lot to make us think and rethink and come to a right conclusion. But silence is not always gold.Sometimes if we suppress any important information, the silence itself amounts to untruth..
When you withhold information,it may amount to cheating. It ruins relationship. On many occasions passive people hurt us more than the abusing ones. Sometimes, it’s not the confrontation or an argument (not the endless one) that hurts, but the silence kills us and makes us emotionally hollow.
when some reconciliation and compromise has been reached,we can't be silent.By profession, teachers, lawyers ,sales men and mothers cannot be silent.
Silence empowers as well as kills.Silent witnessing is as bad as committing a crime.
Madam's snippet on silence persuaded me
to wrire a few lines on 'noise'.Except for the corona year 2020,for all the past 55 long years
all the Hindu temples have been celebrating their annual festivals, all noise and noise alone. For people
living in crowded places like Chennai with temples, church and mosques, it is too nigh a possibility
to enjoy silence , and even to think of silence.

While the entire world is against noise pollution and the feasibility of low decibles,We wonder how the loud noisy tradition was being encouraged by elders and organisers of these festivals from time immemorial.

It is said that when an unborn child is developing, the first thing they hear is the heartbeat of the mother, so when we hear a drum or rhythmic beat in music we naturally feel the presence and comfort of the mother. The beating of the drum vibrates through our bodies and symbolizes the heartbeat of the mother. While beating the drum it connects us with spirit and grounds us to mother earth. The connection and bond with this sound is healing and needed for each and every one of us. The element in which the drums are constructed from is completely natural and very spiritual in making the connection with spirit. This relationship begins through the artistic journey and the co-creation with you, the wood and the sacred hide used in the bonding union of your drum. To each of us this journey is very powerful with a meaning more unique as the bond of the drum and its creation connect them into one. The only thing more powerful will be to add song and prayer to your drumming journey. We can well imagine how open
aired instrument like Naadaswaram and Chendai melam of God's own country have a thrilling impact on us.

The Hindu festivals and weddings are interwoven with loud sounds.
They use to say that the significance of Sakala Vadyam during 'Kaappu kattu, Upaveetha Dharanam and tieing of the sacred knot is more to avoid any inauspicious speeches heard from the congregation.
Though some people argue that peace prevails only in silence, the research on acoustics suggests that sound is the basis on which silence can be enjoyed.
Drumming for personal meditation and relaxation has its roots in prehistoric times. Stone age humans discovered that the beating of a drum had, not only a way of changing the way they felt about the world, but also to some degree seemed to assist the drummer in gaining control over a hostile environment.

The range and subtleties of its notes have led others to claim that by using the drum as a vehicle for meditation, deeper states can be achieved in six minutes that would take a Siddha six hours to achieve. Children, however, have this unique ability in abundance because of their innocence.
The repetitive rhythm is the key to this form of drumming .Regularity and monotony are more important than the speed. . As the brain begins to track the beat, the thinking, everyday part of the brain, becomes mesmerized and begins to release its control over the senses and conscious awareness. This is what makes us relaxed.

In fact, what the brain is actually tracking is not the beat itself but the tonal resonance given off by the drum as it is struck, this resonance is the drums own note and not the one being played by the drummer, and the result is to send the person into a light dreamlike state closer to sleep than wakefulness.
In this respect the trance rhythms are very effective in stress reduction, relaxation and mood changing experiences.
Noise, Noise Noise getting transformed to peace, peace, peace.

There is a difference between SOUND and NOISE. When decibel levels go beyond tolerable levels it becomes noise. But even silence can be deafening. As for Hindu festivals sigh those were the days when they were intimate family affairs and not huge, obscenely obese jamborees.

:hello:Kudos to madam sister @jayasala42 for analysing sound aka noise from cradle to grave and divine aspect of music.
    Beethoven crossed my mind.
Beethoven’s personal life was marked by a struggle against deafness, and some of his most important works were composed during the last 10 years of his life, when he was quite unable to hear. He died at the age of 56.
    Thanks and regards.

Legend has it that one day Beethovan while conducting a orchestra found that he couldn't hear what they were playing. Toying with the idea of suicide he saw a nbird and heard its chirping IN HIS MIND. That changed his mind and he heard music in hs mind. Actually his deafness contributed to freeing his mind from limited notions about sound and he went no composer has ever been before. This not only led to a bold and by his own time avant-garde phase of his work Some of his greatest works including the ninth symphony, (Which completely redefined what a symphony was by having a choral movement inj a totally instrumental form that t was earlier) was composed after he lost his hearing.

    :hello:
When objects travel at a speed multiple times the velocity of sound like mach 1 or mach 2 the above situation occurs. That could be ultra sonics. What I can not hear and perceive it as silence, my dog’s can hear and there ears stiffen up.

    Thanks and Regards.

    Dear Smt. Jayasala:

Excellent article on sound vs silence and how they comingle with each other. Prakrithi itself is created by the vibration of breath according to the Scriptures. Without the sound, manifestation of Prakrithi would not have taken place. As you rightly said, the sound looks to sound better (becomes music) when it is filled with silence in between. The collective energy in our thoughts creates the good and bad aspects of the universe.

As you said rightly, in the real world, silence may mean many things including a crime. The rhythmic sound created by the Tribal drums, affect the nature positively and elevates the lives spiritually. When a Homam is performed, the sound of Vedic chanting creates a positive energy around everyone attending. The sound that came from the Gandiva created fear in the minds of many during Dwapara Yuga. The sound that the Rakshashas made when Rishis performed Yagas disturbed their will to chant.

Sound is transient but silence is eternal.

Thank you Viswa.I was so enchanted with what Srama wrote and felt a little jealous that I could not enjoy the same silence elaborated on.But we also live along with the Aadi and Margazhi Amman songs and our mind automatically expects Thiruppaavai or Maariamman songs. Our children have studied well among this sound/noise.My daughter felt it very pleasant studying while listening to songs. Those who live near Railway lines are so used to Electric train sound that they cannot sleep without the train sound.People living nearby marriage halls are so accustomed to Nadaswaram.Noise also is a part of life.

    Dear Shri Thyagarajan,
Thank you very much for your response citing a reference to Beethoven. While we enjoy silence in a way, we also enjoy sound/music also in some other manner. We cannot live in total serenity and silence. We get worried if our children are totally silent wnd get anxious whether they ar health wise ok. After Corona lock down we see children playing on the road making lot of noise. They live in a world of sounds. From womb to tomb there is some sound.

Silence and noise are both at times makes us angry.
The truth is if there is no noise at all people won’t appreciate silence.
