Hi

I too have a 6 month old baby gal. I started with the infant cereal whn i first introduced solids to her, alongwith that,i used to give her any mashed fruit-banana/apple/peach.

After she completed 6 months,i started giving her veg soup,u can take some moong dal,add vegies like carrot/spinach/beans/tomato add some salt n sugar and pressure cook it,then mash n strain it. My daughter luvs it and also likes it with very soft rice.

U can try this for ur baby.:2thumbsup:

Hi,

Here in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" />UK the health professionals suggest starting solid food only when the baby is 6 months old. They suggest the following

(1) Mashed banana or pureed fruits like apple/pear (these have to be cooked and then pureed). Note that banana may cause constipation in some babies.

(2) Cooked and mashed/pureed vegetables (carrots/potato/sweet potato/yam).

Rice is the most recommended cereal and is preferred over wheat/oats (which have gluten and hence can cause food allergy in some babies).

I started giving rice to my baby when she was about 6 months. I made a smooth paste of rice and cooked vegetables like cooked carrots and peas (as these vegetables are a bit sweet babies like them). Now she is 9 months old and has rice, dal and different vegetables.

My daughter was born in India so I gave her traditional Kerala baby foods like finger millet (Ragi/Kora/Muthari in Malayalam) or wheat when she was about 3-4 months old. The preparation is as follows.

Ragi: Ragi was soaked in water, ground in the mixer and then sieved. The filtered Ragi water was then cooked till it became semisolid (I cooked it at least 10 minutes).
Wheat and oats: I soaked the broken wheat (broken sooji gothambu in Malayalam) or oats in water for a few hours and then nicely crushed it with fingers and filtered. The filtrate was cooked as I did for Ragi.

I used to add sugar while cooking the above foods, but stopped doing so after arriving here in UK as the health professionals told me not to add any sugar to the baby food till they are a year old. They say it can encourage a sweet tooth and lead to tooth decay. They also suggest not to add any salt into the baby food till the baby is one year old because they get all the salt they need from breast/formula milk.

Hope this helps.

Re: Type of solid food for 4 months old baby

i started off with pureed veges (carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes to start with... beans types come after 8 months or so), pureed fruits (apples, pear, banana you can give it as it's). veges i used to steam well and mash. fruits you can just blend in mixie (without skin). i started solid foods only from 8 months for my boy until then i was feeding him. so i also gave well cooked rice with rasam, cereals (like oats). my son's paed told me not to give cow's milk until 1 yrs but we can use cow's milk to cook the cereals. also i gave him yogurt. but for a 4 month old it's also better to check with the doctor. if he's not drinking milk properly probably they'll advise you to give formula milk. because at this age they get essential nutrients from milk (mother's or formula... not cow's milk). so do check with the doctor. they'll tell you exactly what to give. Re: Type of solid food for 4 months old baby

Hi Ramyau

I would not recommend giving a 4 month old solid food. The best time to start is at 6 months. Babies get bored with food really fast, so its best to start a little late. I started my 11 month old baby with solid foods only at 6 months. Also my ped. has told me that I can start my baby with cow's milk at 10 months, it basically depends on the baby's growth and weight gain.
hope this helps...

Re: Type of solid food for 4 months old baby

hi ramya,

even my i had the same problem with my son, it was really frusturating, he didn't drink milk properly too, his ped told me to start solids when he was four, i started to give him solids from the fifth month, i just started with rice cereal(mixed with breast milk), only in the afternoon in the first week, and from second week i started trying the veggies, carrots, beans etc and fruits after that everything from gerber, but just make sure you try one (the same thing)at a time for atleast 3 to 4 days continuously, so that you will know if he is allergic to anything. its better to start with cereal and veggie and fruits atlast.
