An old age story and a new era story

During Buddha’s era, there was a story: A woman, whose only child died of sickness and was deserted by her husband. She was very sad, and wanted to end her own life. She believed that Sakyamuni Buddha had the mystic power to revive her child’s life, so she carried the child’s body to see the Buddha. She pleaded with Buddha to help her, otherwise she would not believe that Buddha had mystic power and she would have considered Buddha’s enlightenment a fake.

First, Sakyamuni Buddha asked her to find a family who has not experienced death. Then she had to obtain from the family a mustard seed before he could revive the child’s life.

The woman visited many families but she could not find one family without experiencing death in the past.

At last the woman realized human beings must die, for immortality does not exist. It is impossible to resurrect the dead.

After reading the story I just dozed off.

Suddenly I found myself in the ashram of a famous Godman. Many people attired in red garments were waiting in the queue to have darshan of the Godman to pour out their woes in the belief that he would find solution.
I just asked a person why he was waiting in the queue and what was his problem.

He said, “What to tell? My son has scored very high marks, being born in forward community he could not get admission in a reputed engineering college. My financial position is not sound enough to pay capitation fee demanded by the college. Hence I have come here to seek the blessings of the seer.”

I said, “So sorry to hear this. I will wait here for you to know whether the Godman finds any solution for your problem. I think he could help you at least to give your son a seat in the college run by his charity. Wish you good luck!”

I was waiting until he came out. I was very eager to find out whether he was successful in his mission.

When I saw him coming out, I went and asked him what the Godman told him.

He said, “He told me to bring someone who has not paid even a single pie to get his work done like obtaining a land patta, a driving licence, a government job, approval for a multi storied building or getting approval for medical or engineering college without greasing the hands of the concerned officials. Then I told him it might not be possible for me to bring a person like that from our country. Do you think it is possible?”

Then I said, “ I doubt it very much. Why didn’t you ask him to give a seat in his college?”

He replied, “I did request him, but he said that he being a detached person, he does not interfere in these mundane things. Only the dean and the administrative board will take the decision.”

I suddenly got up hearing the shrill ring of the phone and my DH telling me that he was pressing the calling bell more than five minutes.

    Dear Aruna,
Thank you for dropping in and posting your comments. It is a great irony that people approach Gods' men of all categories to fulfill their wishes.

    Dear Pushpa,

Read ur writings.. a good leson indeed. Sometimes we seek to end the challanges in life a faster way but we dont realise that we have to go through the challanges in life to become a better person. None can run a way from faith. Now days even for a small matter we try too seek faster ways to solve the problem rather than trying it out. Like the addmission matter.

    Luv,
    Suzanne

    Dear Suzaane,
By and large people have become greedy and materialistic. They want to achieve whatever they want by hook or crook. The straight forward ones are afraid that they would be left behind in the rat race and pushed to the wall.

    Pushpavalli ma'am,
Thank you for sharing the story about the dead child and Buddha's explanation, regarding how he cannot revive him.
You had really weaved a very nice story around this philosophy, which is the harsh reality.

    Dear Sriniketan,
Thanks for dropping in and your appreciation for the post. The parents who wants to get admission to their children in a reputed college are really under great pressure. There was a time when philanthropists started colleges with a service mind and now politicians and spiritual persons are trying to exploit people and making money through educational institutions. It is a very pathetic situation.

    Dear Pushpavalli.

Short and sweet - your write-up conveys it all - about the materialistic society, about attitudes, values.

What to do? We stupid humans 'are like this only' - not willing to learn from the mistakes of others.

    Nice Day
    Shail

    Dear Shail,
    Thanks for your sweet appreciation.
There are some people who learn from other peoples' experience and mistakes. There are some who learn from their own mistakes and experience and the most pitiable are the ones who do not learn even from their own mistakes and experience.
People give importance only to material things and no concern for values and relationship, but there are still some people who vouch for values.
