    “Varum aanaal varaathu”!
(It will come but not come!)

This famous sentence from a recent movie, featuring Vadivelu, can even make a corpse with Rigor Mortis smile, but is an apt description of what happens when a slew of cyclones with exotic names threaten to dump precious drops of water, but fail to give even a customary glance at the water-starved city. But then comes Vardah, with a vengeance that didn’t even spare the smallest croton plant in the tiny patch of my so-called garden.

Water was always a precious commodity, through out my life time spent in Chennai. When newspapers showcased dwindling levels of water in the reservoirs, people like me used water sparingly, having gone through years of rigours involved in fetching just a bucket of water – waking up midnights, hitting the hand pump, stalking homes which had a bounty of water coming from their hand pumps, waiting in long queues for those invisible water tankers. Chennaities could be called the paragons of patience.

But when the monsoons arrived, along with rains that came along with it, people had to grapple with another set of problems, involving all classes of the society. Power cuts were regular features. All the precautions taken beforehand would come to a naught, as we had to live without power for more than 3 days. This meant climbing 4 floors with several buckets of water from the sump below to pull on for another day. The fridge also breathed a sigh of relief, since all of its contents were removed and it was given a clean wipe all over. Weeks-old sambar, rotten tomatoes., fungus-covered curd - all thrown in to the garbage bin. Fresh food made and consumed immediately. This meant we enjoyed candle-light breakfast, lunch and dinners. Carrom boards, Ludo games are dusted and taken out and for once the family shares some happy times together. Without internet, we got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to look at our real next-door neighbour, and after a brief conversation, realised she was not as wicked as we had imagined her to be.

Well, Vardah or Neelam – these names may send a shiver through our spines, creating havoc, destroying precious homes, trees and people, but sure it brings some moments of harmony in families, when people are seriously and constantly immersed in FB, Twitter and What’s App. Thank you Vardah - for making people realise the fragility of human beings in front of the powerful nature and bringing out the tougher side of human beings in surviving the odds!

Madam, I really like the touch of humor in your snippet. Cleaning the fridge of age old food products, playing and talking with friends, neighbors and family. Enjoying food with all family members-I could very well 'see' these events happen as you have described.
Sorry about your 'so-called garden' and I also feel bad for those uprooted trees allover Chennai and other affected trees. Had the people responsible taken steps to periodically groom the trees by cutting branches time and again, this unfortunate up-rooting of trees and them falling on buildings and properties might have been avoided. Though loss of precious lives was minimum thanks to the prior precautions taken by all those concerned- the government and the people, looks like there is a huge economic loss on account of Vardah. I hope and pray that the city of Chennai and the affected districts recover soon from this natural calamity.

    Hi Pavitra,

Nice to see your comment. I was always proud of my neighborhood, which sported an array of flowering trees and walking under the canopy of trees was always like a dream come true. Now the roads present a pathetic sight with almost all the trees lying aside like dead warriors. I offered my silent prayers to these timeless sentinels which gave us the much needed protection from the overwhelming pollution!

Nicely written Agatha. True its paining to see the uprooted trees which is a must in the mostly hot city like Chennai. I like the way you have glazed a serious issue in humour.

    Dear Agatha,
Only on such occasions we feel that humanity has not left us totally.Deluge in Dec 2015
taught us how to live without power for nearly a month in our house.our kuthu vilakku and earthern lamps were put to maxuse. This occasion being karthigai deepam we kept all the agals in the hall, as nothing could be kept outside.
No life was lost.Yet problems continue. All the streets are strewn with leaves, branches and half cut stems. It may take at least a month to resume normalcy.many electric posts have fallen.Tangedco people worked day and night risking their lives to resume power supply.
In our area there was no power for 2 days. From today there will be power only during nights. We have to use all the equipments only during night hours.
Poor students! Those who appear for Board Exam are unable to concentrate. This time water splashed through slits in the closed windows and many houses in the first and second floor got 4inches water in every room while houses in the ground flooe remained unaffected quite contrary to the floods last year.
    varum-aanaal varaathu'.
But this time it has come.
It is nothing unusual for Tamilnadu and Southern Andhra to experience
Cyclone during the three month period when North East Monsoon is active.
Except a couple of occasions, the Metropolis Chennai has been spared from
the wrath and fury of these devastating impact of Cyclones.
It used to be the ill fated Cuddalore and Nagapattinam District to suffer the
    onslaught of Cyclones.

One such devastating Cyclone in December 1964, which carried a wind velocity of 240 Kms damaged the Pamban Bridge the link to the holy town Rameswaram from the main land.
It almost made the island Dhanushkodi disappear from the map.
Then when the history of Cyclones tell a different story why did the Vardha Cyclone hit the Metropolis and had its land fall right through the heart of the city bringing the city to its knees and limb and lick its wounds.
One must be aware that the Cyclone has been as usual predicted to make its land fall some where between Guntur and Vishakapatnam, in Andhra.
Then one should wonder that no cyclone looked back from its set course and moved only forward.
Cyclones formed from/ near the Andaman had the unusual record of hitting the Coast of Orissa or even the State of West Bengal.
Unusually they had land fall in our neighbouring Country Bangladesh/s Chittagong
But they never returned back to hit the Tamilnadu Coast.

Even the Meteorological Department which is guided by Satellites and all State of the art gadgets would not know the reasons for a move in the reverse direction to wreak vengeance at Chennai
which has buried their leader J.Jayalalithaa on the sands of the Bay of Bengal.

Yes! Jayalaithaa was the unconquered Queen with no second in command any where in sight. And her dikats were holy and sacred and more than that has been ordained by the almighty.Nobody even would have dreamt of going against it, leave alone the nerve to contest it.
But many in the Party and Government believed now that she has been safely buried in a sandal wood casket six fathoms deep they have exorcised totally the powers and aura of the charismatic leader who had no parallel in the recent History of Tamilnadu.
They proceeded to elect O.P.Paneerselvam as the Chief Minister.
The Cyclone Vardha did not change course and it was on its set path still.

Even when Jayalaithaa was having her battle for life, Sasikala struck a deal with O.P.Panneerselvam to support her move to hijack the Party as her family fiefdom for her rule with the family by proxy.
Jayalithaa must have turned in her grave uneasily during the two days after her burial.
As if God sent, a blessing in disguise, her mentor, advisor and sincere friend and well wisher and Sasikala baiter, Cho.Ramasamy arrived at her door step.
Then it was all a child's play to teach such devils in human a suitable lesson.
They set a change of course in the reverse direction of Cyclone Vardhaa moving towards Chennai and hitting it at its most vulnerable spot, the heart of the city.
Those who still believe that there has been a smooth sailing on the transfer of power in the
Government and the Party know not what is in store for them as they indeed know not the Jayalithaa, what if, she is dead and buried and some aspirants to join hands with Jay's bosom friend unashamedly practicing the AIDMK culture of kneeling down and fall at the feet for gain, personal wealth.
If it is not Jayalithaa, it made no difference, so what, it is Sasikala!
This is the first missile unleashed by the Jayalathaa, through the Cyclone Vaardha.
Let us wait and watch Tamil nadu politics and see how much of personal linen is to be washed in public.
Now do you understand why 'varaathu' has been reversed into 'varum?

It is sad that along with the trees, the constant chirping of birds, which I enjoyed very much has also vanished. Nature doesn't differentiate between human beings, animals, birds or other organisms, when it comes to destruction.

    Dear Jayasala,

What a brilliant way of connecting two opposite terms 'varum and varaathu' and weaving in together some burning issues regarding politics in to the subject. We are all tiny species in front of the mighty nature and it is high time we respect nature and learn to live with it, as our responsible ancestors did. Thank you very much for your very informative FB.
