    Thiruppavai - Andal's Divine Melodies
    .

    ANDAL1.jpg

    The month of Marghazi which starts today, the 17th of December, is considered by our wise ancesters as the holiest period and conducive for spiritual pursuits cosmically. The period, from when the sun moves into the constellation of Dhanurrasi (or Sagittarius )and until it moves out to the constellation of Makara (or Capricorn) is known as Dhanurmasam. In Thiruppavai Andal gives a universal call to all people to recite the name and glories of Lord.We are told that this a the period in which Gods are physically present on Earth. This is the time when the whole family and society are to engage in spiritual activities in one form or other. Yatras are undertaken, Bhajans, Unjavritis and concerts are held. Young girls pray for a happy married life. Pavai Nonbu is a beautiful way of encouraging and training the young girls in the spiritual activities for her future role as a wife, mother, and the centre around which the house revolves.

    In this thread I am glad to give a song a day for the 30 days of Marghazhi with meaning. I am glad to start with the first song of Thiruppavai, every song of which is known for its divinity, bhakthi, and literary excellence, beauty and simplicity.

    May Lord Vishnu bless us all.

    நீராடப்போதுவீர்! போதுமினோ, நேரிழையீர்!
    சீர்மல்கும்ஆய்ப்பாடிச்செல்வச்சிறுமீர்காள்!
    கூர்வேல்கொடுந்தொழிலன்நந்தகோபன்குமரன்,

    It's Margali month, moon replete and the day is proper
    We shall bathe, girls of Ayarpadi prosperous
    Will you move out? You wealthy adorn'd fine jewels;
    Narayana, son of relentless Nandagopala,
    Whose job wielding a sharp spike ever alert and
    The lion cub of Yasoda with eye gracious
    And the lad with dark complexion, handsome eye
    And face sunny bright pleasant as moon
    Sure shall grant us the desire soon
    To the esteem of this earth as a boon;
    Oblige, involve, listen and consider, our damsel

    Dear DD @Lathasv,

    I recall nostalgic childhood days in which, I was woken by Bhajan's and Paavai in Margazhi and rushed to make kolams and to the river Thambiravaruni for a cool bath in my village.

    Thanks for your informative feed back.

    May Lord Ventakeshwara bless you and your family in abundance.

    Om Shri Sai Lakshmi Narayanaya Namaha- Humble salutation to Sai who is the incarnation of Lord Narayanaya, the consort of Goddess Lakshmi.

    Dear Suryakala,
    Nice thread suited to this month.This little girl Andal has given the veda saaram through her paasurams.
    In 1955, Paramacharya started a conference called'Thiruppaavai, thiruvempavai and thiruppalli Ezhuchchi, the latter two written by manicka vachakar. Thiruppavai is rather easy to memorise.;but 20 verses from Thiruvempavai are somewhat difficult. When I was 9, I took it as a worship and was able to memorise all paasurams. It was a nice experience to go to temple at 4 A. M., had a chance to sing the verses through mike and it was a pride that our voices were heard throughout the village.We got hot hot venpongal prasadam on a plantain leaf.We used to hold it on our paavadai to resist heat unmindful of who saw us.

    Dear DD @sangeethakripa,

    Thanks for your nice feed back.

    It is such a pleasant experience to hear or recite Paavai in Margazhi every day. Every year I always look forward for this experience in Margazhi.

    We will enjoy the Paasurams in the coming days!
