When agasthiar is taking sacred bath in River Kaveri, he feels that he was changing....... changing......changed into a house fly......he flews.Shiva had many forms. one among them is mystical and power ful one. that form is ardhanareeswara. Ardha means half and Naari means woman. Right Half is man and left half is woman united together and made this form. agasthiar came to Thirueengoi malai in the house fly form .He entered the temple in mid night through the key hole, and made penance and pooja to Lord Shiva. He himself " I agasthiar came here in the form of house fly and made pooja to Lord Shiva .From now this place will be named as Thiru Eengoi malai" wrote this as a manu script and kept in front of Linga. The next day priest came and saw the poojas, fresh flowers and fragrance in sanctam sanctorum .He saw the manu script too. That script is preserved and kept in safe. before 20 years that script was lost. It is a maragatha linga(emerald ).So the lord is named as maragathachaleeswarar. and Devi is Maragathambigai. it is an ancient temple built in 7th century in the period of kulothunga chola. In this temple there is a beautiful ardhanareeswara statue before the sanctam sanctorum. This is exceedingly interesting and extra ordinay piece of sculpture. The weapons in hands are pasa, angusa, chin mudra and abhaya mudra.Standing in Rishaba vahan. This place is meant for ardhanari, Devi is prime. Hence the vimana of Devi has 3 Kalasa(casket).

Every year on March 11,12,13 the rays of sun will falls on linga from 6.25---6.30 a.m. it is a miraculas one. Famous Nayanmars sung song on this lord. Thirugnana sambandar sung 10 songs, Nakkeerar ---70 songs. There is a statue for Bogar in the Foot of the hill. From there ,there is a subway to Palani hill. before 200 years there was emerald linga and very beautiful devi statue that was destroyed in the invasion of Sultans. This is hill temple of about 620 steps. The place where agasthiar took bath is now known as "Kondu maari". It is a small channel of River Kaveri.

Sthala Vriksha :tamarind. all the ripened tamarind in this place will turn to ash.
