The Little Black Dress

Last night I had been to dinner at the local restaurant, a regular kind of place nothing fanciful, just your average and above Udipi type.

Coming to the dinner, the place happens to be popular, vantage- location highway, a stopover for travellers and locals. Living off city limits in not so suburban Mumbai, there is not much choice. The food is fairly safe, reasonably priced and hygiene levels not dismal, management attentive and the waiters decent. I had nearly finished my meal as I saw a young couple enter, a little hesitant and unsure of the place. Obviously they weren't locals.

The lady wore a little black dress, trifle more than camisole that rose daringly above the knee showing off her shapely legs to advantage which she did as she walked in stilettos, adding good 4 inches to her tall frame. Her shoulders were bare with string of pearls that clutched at the neck, accentuating her collar bone. She wore the hair loose, streaks highlighted in honey amber which glowed in the lights. Pretty sight it was. Something a small town does not get to see much.The guy accompanying her was dressed beret to boots, must be brave enough gentleman to weather the sweltering heat of May. Our men are pretty modest here when it comes to dress. Not many risks, gelled hair, some finger rings, jazzy watch, leather jacket, boots and they're done easily. Not the girls, a lot of artwork done hair and body, right down to details of nail art. It's tough being a woman. Looking good doesn't come easy.

Wel, the couple entered, setting a slight flutter among the hotel staff. The captain rushed out to offer the best seats available trying to look unperturbed while at it, the manager himself came down to receive them, civil and attentive to the couple as they settled down to the table. The attending captain couldn't take his eyes off the lady as he drew out the chair in full gallantry. A bunch of waiters hovering in the background tried to make themselves useful fetching water, laying the table, barely able to conceal their excitement. The air conditioning was adjusted as per the lady’s request and the couple settled to their food. The rest of us trying to appear nonchalant, though obviously disturbed by the new entrant. There was an unmistakable buzz in the air, the waiters exchanged smiles, captain looked as if he had a happy day, manager got back to his billing one eye at the table. The other women looked in envy since none were treated like a queen, until the lady in black arrived, but the menfolk around seemed pleasantly distracted though. The diners commenced with renewed interest, while the lady herself appeared unmindful of the spell cast around.

I smiled thinking, women hold sway over men, say what you may.
We ask our men to behave and rightly so. But logically, I pity the guys, how could they possibly overlook such a vision.
