    Thingalur [Temple for MOON]

Thingalur temple is dedicated to Moon (Chandra). Thingalur means land (Oor) of Moon (Thingal). The temple is placed perfectly at a walking distance from Suryanar Koil. There is a beautiful Shiva Lingam enshrined at this place. The idol of Periyanayagi.(Goddess Parvati – consort of Lord Shiva) also adorns the temple. Idols of Lord Ganesha and Lord Muruga with two of his consorts Devayani and Valli are also worshipped at this shrine. The small temple dedicated to moon is placed little distance away form the main temple of Shiva.

It is believed that to eliminate the malefic influence of the Moon, one has to offer prayers at this temple. Many devotees wearing white dresses undertake fasting on full moon days and offer prayers at this temple.

Thingalur is on the way from Thiruvaiyaru to Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District of Tamilnadu State, India. It is around 25 Kms away from Thanjavur in the North direction.

As chandran (moon) was very much handsome and legible, Daksha Prajapathi gave all his 27 daughters (Stars) in marriage to him. Instead of treating all of them alike, he neglected 26 wives and spent most of his time with the 27th wife Rohini . Daksha Prajapathi advised Chandran to treat all his 27 wives equally. But Chandran ignored him. Daksha Prajapathi got offended and cursed Chandran that he should suffer from a wasting disease. Chandran prayed to Lord Siva in Thingalur to save him from the curse. Saving him God ordered that Chandran should remain in the temple in Thingalur and should give relief to those, suffering from the ill effects of Chandran’s adverse placement in their horoscopes and offering prayers to him. So, such people who are affected by the adverse positions of Chandran in their horoscopes offer prayers to Lord Kailasanathar, Goddess Sri Periyanayaki and Chandra Bagavan (moon God), by offering prayers.

Dosham to mother, mental retardation, skin and nerve problems, jaundice, fluid accumalation are the diseases caused because of Chandra dosham. By praying to Lord Chandran, the above afflictions can be overcome. Wealth, mother's/wife's happiness, Govt's help, ownership of vehicle, marriage, offsprings, prosperity, foreign travel will be bestowed on his devotees. Chandran is the Lord of Kadaga Rasi and he faces the South-East direction. The Adi Devatha is water; prathyathi Devatha is Gowri; his colour is white and his vahana is white horse. The grain associated with him is paddy, rice; the folwer - white arali; fabric - white cloth; gem - pearl; food - curd rice.
