paper mache need help

Hi

I am trying my hand in paper mache crafts. I prepared a bowl from the Maida and water paste. But then when I stuck the newspapers and it dried out it came out wrinkly and rough.
Can anyone tell me how to prepare paper mache clay so that I can use as any other clay(eg air dry clay) and how to get a smoother finish to the craft.
Please help me out and it would be helpful if you post some of your crafts.
I have seen other threads too but i dint find any proper method for preparing the clay.
