    "Why do women who are willing to go to travel to foreign lands on their own need someone to accompany them to some place within the city"? This is the generalized form of a question posed by a stand-up comedian when talking about his daughters who are willing to travel to Dubai to listen to a rock star while they need him to escort them to some suburb of Mumbai.

    Well, being men, there is one thing they do not understand. It is much safer to travel on one's own in other countries than when one is exposed to gender based harassment on the streets of one's own country. (Am not negating other kinds of attacks in other countries, but those can be avoided to a large extent).

    However, life has changed even within the last 5 years! For the better. Jai Google maps. It was with tremendous confidence that I was able to travel in cabs and auto rickshaws when I visited Chennai a few months ago - something I would never have dreamed of before that marvel of technology entered our lives. I love it when I turn on the voice which gives directions. The driver can also benefit while being perfectly aware of the fact that I know exactly where he is headed! There is just one small problem. The woman who gives directions often decides to take me to the place by the longest route available. Of course, I don't care if the fare is prefixed. That is another benefit if one is travelling by prepaid cab/auto. Paying by wallet ensures I don't get ripped off on every ride of change which the driver never 'has' and which I may or may not have and I don't have to get into a haggling match with him. So much stress avoidance!

    That was my today's ode to technology. :)

    You know Sats, I forgot to read the rest of your post as this question struck me like a bullet and started pondering about that powerful statement.

    I know so many women who need their husbands to take them around town but they travel to India and even go on "girls-only" vacations to other countries. Mmmm...:thinking:

    Oh, I love Google maps. Not only directions but it also tells us about traffic back ups. That has saved us a lot of time on numerous occasions.
    This always gives us another thing to ponder about. Every single car on the roads are being tracked. That is amazing while also a bit unsettling.

    @satchitananda

    I am not a tech savvy person; whatever little I use, I just love it. It has made our lives so much simpler. It is a blessing to have Google maps handy while travelling.

    Dear Satchi,

    The women have elevated themselves from pepper spray to defend themselves to mobile platform that tells them whether they are in the right road towards their destination. There are mobile apps now that enables a woman to quickly call 911 (without actually speaking a word) when they are in trouble and the cops show up in less than 2-3 minutes here in the US because of location identification enabled in the smartphone. Gone are the days when women need someone to accompany them.

    Besides, almost all the states in the US have built a wireless network dedicated only for emergency responders so that they don't have to compete with others.

    Google Maps are pretty good and straight forward. You just need a mighty good car and you are all set to go. I totally love the enhanced features they have introduced . The offline map downloading option, location sharing , looking for fuel stations , Food and rest areas for stops in between the journey are some great options that I have always used and admired.

    My dear Satchi
    You are wrong for once. There is not just one thing that men do not understand. There are several things about women that make them knit their eyebrows. Look at these ten things for instance. Ask a man accompanying his wife to a boutique and he will list out a hundred things he does not understand about women. Adam never understood why his wife wanted a particular Apple when there were thousands of fruits in the wilderness that they shared!
