I am glad you figured it out. My friends live in LA, most of the time they travel with Singapore airlines, it is costly but still wait time is about the same (12+ hours wait time). They actually prefer this....

To make your journey easy, have light weight hand baggage. Have one small bedsheet (if you want to relax your legs, dnt mind sitting at quite and neat places within airport). Get some snack to eat and your fav books or magazines to read....

Most people drive from LA to San jose, it is quite common here. As others said Hawaii vacation is the best and costly....so plan on enoying that trip than on worrying about your US flight....
