    Hi SSS,

I really do not know about this. maybe something new the Credit card companies have come up with??

Even last year when i went to India, I had charged all my expenses and they did not take a single penny in international transaction charges.

So I cannot help you there my dear. May be it differs with each bank that issues the VISA card. You might want to call up your credit card customer service and find out.

Somehow got hold of a rep and was told that there is a 3% conversion fee....which for me seems too much...say when I spend $1000 I need to lose 30$...

I can use the wire transfer instead where they charge flat rate 40$...no matter the amt...

    Thanks Ladies...Bow

Now I am confused.. how can you wire transfer when you are shopping?

The 3% conversion was when you did shopping in India? Please clarify.

oh sorry nandhu for not being clear...

Yep...3% fee is for our spendings in India...

I thought wire transfer in advance b4 we leave for India would be cheaper than this..

    Hi
When I visit Inida, I use Credit card. Each year the rules are changing. When I went few years ago, there was no transaction fees but now most of the credit card companies use foreign transaction fee. It can be varied from 1% to 3% depends on the company.

I use only CapitalOne(Visa) becuase they don't charge any fee. I have used it in January 08 and didn't charge any fees.

Another change of rule is before you leave this country, call your credit card company to authorize the use of your card at your destination. They want the exact date of travel. If you don't do that, your card will not work at India or any other country. This is to avoid unauthorized use.

    Enjoy your trip.
