The earliest entertainer and famous Dog Cinema Star was the Alsatian Rin-Tin-Tin who entered films in 1923 with the movie "Where the North Begins" which was a phenomenal success and put Warner Brothers on top of the list of movie moghuls.Rin-Tin-Tin's popularity rivalled that of Charlie Chaplain , Douglas Fairbanksand Mary Pickford ! In one poll in 1925 he was voted the most popular star in America.He went on to make 40 films.In 1927 Rin-Tin-Tin was earning $300 a week; he had his own banking account,maintained a car ,a lovely house and eat two fresh steaks a day !! His activities were reported alongside of two legged stars in the fan and gossip magazines of that era ! He died in harness in 1932 whilst on location for a serial,"Pride of the Legion".He married a beautiful female Alsatian and fathered large families One of his sons, Rin -Tin- Tin Junior also went into films but never achieved fame like his father. Another famous name is LASSIE.The original Lassie was a He called PAL.. He was born the runt of his litter,but MGM made Pal famous as a She dog called LASSIE ! Charlie Chaplains mongrel dog called Scraps was a liitle celebrity and very close to Chaplain's heart. The St Bernard , Beethoven in recent times have captured our hearts. Dogs have played an important part in the realm of space exploration LAIKA was the first space dog to circle the earth.She was launched in SPUTNIK ! in October 1957. BELKA and STRELKA two Russian dogs made a successful trip to space and back in August 1960 after circling the earth 17 times.
