"We are going to Mahabalipuram" announced the older sib. "We shall visit you for a week. We'll attend all the various receptions and pack off the next day. We have booked two rooms, so you can come with us too".

I loved the idea. A few days by the beach! I love going and soaking myself in the sea. I have probably mentioned earlier what a criminal waste of beach and sea water it is going there with the BH. He refuses to let me go anymore than knee deep and if I want to swim, he insists I sit down in the water and he will hold my hand till I feel like a dog on a leash. "I don't know how to swim and if you drown I can't come to save you" says the gallant man! "But I can swim and don't need any saving" I say to ears which are firmly shut without earplugs.

I badly need an outing. I have had enough of my room, my students, my work and youtube. Youtube certainly does not score high when it presents one with infinite predictions of tsunamis anywhere between the date you plan to land in Mahabalipuram and the end of the year. "There is a very high possibility of a tsunami" I inform the sib and bil. There is no response. My nephew says "don't worry, the astrologer has asasured you 80 years and mom 85". Now that sounds really optimistic. I don't know which is worse! 80 years of the best with the risk of developing Alzheimers' or being washed off by a tsunami! Oh well! I think I'd still risk the Alzheimers'. I don't particularly enjoy water entering my nose, especially when it is high in salts!

Talking of salts, I need to check my BP. Being married to a doc is enough to give one a headache, but going to visit his friends in hospital can give one reason to cancel a trip to Mahabalipuram. So I cancel the trip. "You can still come" says the sib seeing my sad face. "It is not too difficult. Just 6 hours by train and a couple of hours drive from there by cab". 8 hours of waking up at unearthly hours to catch a train (never mind the fact that I still did to see them off! ), sitting upright in a train and then in a cab, dragging suitcases along ..... I just realized a very important fact of life "I am not an upright member of society." Certainly not upright enough to travel. I get a lot of pics from them from Mahabalipuram. BIL is no better than the BH. What is it with men? So I see the sib standing in water enough to lick the soles of her feet. I chide her for that. Next day she gets wet upto the knee! Yippee! Finally some good sense dawning.

There has not been any tsunami thus far. I get bored at home. So I pack off to work to see what tsunamis of brilliance our students decide to unleash on us in the exams. At least I can get some tax free entertainment while also getting paid for it!!! As for Mahabalipuram, the beach will have to wait for me. Don't get washed away in any tsunami until then, dear beach!

Dear Satchi,
We are not the upright members of society
In someway or other. It need not be physical condition always . May be some mental quirks. Though I am physically OK but have a phobia for water. No logical reason. We once went to Trivandrum and Kovalam....I was the only one in the family who was sitting on the shore under the umbrella with chairs.
Tsunami is the biggest threat one can associate with water!
So, you have company.

LOL Shyamala. We seem to have problems which stop us going to water either way - me physical, you your phobias! The threat of a tsunami can stop you from going to a coastal city, but once you are there, it does not matter whether you sit under the umbrella or step into the water to play. So you might enjoy the water while you are there!

Some spouses are that over protective like your BH. During my last month's visit to Goa I was prevented from going on a trip to watch dolphins. DW put her foot down because the boats take off from a place where there is no jetty and you have to wade through the murky waters of Mandovi river to get into the boat. Your GBP probably goes up because of your students. You porobably have some Dummkopfe among them.

Oh no! Not allowed to go and see the dolphins!!! That is heartbreaking. And thanks for informing me about the dolphins. I think I have my next holiday planned.

As for my students, ..... what do I say? This was the first semester in 15 years where I threw a fit 3 times over and told them to get lost and walked out of class. There was shocked silence. It took me about an hour after coming back home to regain my composure. For all that most of them passed, 3 or 4 of them with more than 80% and 3 failed. I am relieved. Was worried all of them would flunk!!! So yes, they have contributed in no mean measure to my BP. No, they are not dumm, they are over-smart - too smart for their own good!

Not taking a vacation but going to read your students' write ups!!! You are brave girl! Deserve an Arjuna award, I tell ya!

Married to a doctor gives you BP and headache? Hehehe! Lemme write a book of what married to a scientist is. I remember most of the days are like this when I am asked to explain everything clearly in bullets.

Well, my sob-story later...let me come to yours.
Now tell me if the students lived up to your expectation of a tsunami? Also rest assured and take it from me, self-made psycho analyst, if you are constantly bombarded by your students's tsunamis you will ward off Alzheimer's till eighty and beyond!
