Actually when I started to think about it ... I can see the pattern, why I end up feeling offended and patronized sometimes. ideasmiley

My viewpoint came first from the fact that I am the mother of adult children. And know how hard it is to restrict yourself and not give advise (except if asked). And when giving advice how careful you have to be. Use phrases like "in my view", "I think that" because there is always this emotional baggage between the children and parents. You have to honor your childs right to their own values and opinion.

No, it is not formal. But with your own children you have to go the extra step to clearly show that you are now on equal level.

Still sounds very formal. With children going extra step to teach them good values makes sense, but for advices... naahh... I'd even shout at my neighbor's kids for fighting with each other. :coffee

I was now talking about adult children, not kids. The challenge is that when kids are small you teach them, when they are adults you are equals. And the transition is not easy.
