Confused With Elementary "cut Off "dates..kindly Clarify

    If October is the cut off,

    When will A December 2012 baby start elementary school

    When will a July 2013 baby start elementary school?

    Or will they be in the same class?

    Hi Anika,

    It is confusing, but you are not alone :)

    If Oct 1st is the cut-off date...
    Dec 2012 baby will be 4yrs 10months old as of Oct 2017. So will start Kinder in Fall 2018 (5yrs 8months old).
    July 2013 baby will be 5yrs 3 months old as of Oct 2018. So will also start Kinder in Fall 2018 too (5yrs 1month old).

    Both will be in the same class.

    As a rule, anybody born bw Oct of one one year(say, 2012), and Sep of the next year (2013) is in the same class.

    So does it mean dec baby will be almost 7 when she starts elementary?that is 2019

    Little confused as kiddo started pre k as of September 2016 after summer holidays despite not being 4 yet?. so as per my calculation till next june she will be in pre k and then summer holidays and next 2017 September will start kindergarten..

    So from sep 2017 to next June 2018 will be in kindergarten and then after summer holidays it will
    Be elementary from September 2018..

    This is actually my understanding

    Hope am clear.kindly bear with me and explain it to me dear ladies..little confusing

    As per the Oct 1st cut-off, your kid will go into Transitional Kindergarten between Sep 2017 and start actual Kindergarten in Sep 2018 followed by elementary etc. Transitional Kindergarten is almost like repeating Pre-K. Your kid will be one of the older ones in her batch when she starts elementary.

    Cut-offs are different for most states and school districts. In Massachusetts cut off is 1 September. My son is October 2013 born, Pre-schools here accept kids if they are 3.5 years old by 1 September. So he will skip the year. He will be the oldest (4 year old or to be precise he will be 3 years and 11 months) when he goes to pre-school next year.

    Which state are you in? I Send my kids to a county run preschool where they have programs for 2y olds, 3y olds and then pre k. So a dec 2012 born child will be eligible for the 2y old program sep of 2015 (when he/she is 2 years and 9 months old), 3 y old program in sep 2016 and pre k in sep 2017. (s)he will thus be eligible for kidergarten by sep 2018. I am not aware of any transitional kidergarten programs. Also, elementary school is kindergarten to grade 5. So kindergarten is a part of elementarty school.
