You are right. Bill Maher said yesterday in "Real Time" that a Senator who represents the population of a couple of crabs get to decide who will have to be nominated to the highest court of the United States. Majority doesn't count unlike other countries. State rules with reference to how the electoral college will be assigned, two senator per state rule, the right to redistrict by the state legislatures based on race and ethnicity, etc. considerably influence most decisions in this country.

There is nothing wrong in conservatism but converting the people into a bunch of xenophobic population with nationalist agenda is outright wrong. This country became the most wealthiest and powerful nation in the world not through nationalist agenda but by welcoming the talents through legal immigrant population, planning and building excellent infrastructure, creating an environment for people to thrive in the field of their interest and encouraging research and development. This automatically awarded the leadership to this nation.

We are uniquely positioned in the world and to throw that away for no reason is terrible. We, as people, need to learn the history and remodel the politics to achieve the core competencies that already exist.

Where did you get that idea? You are mistaken. Maybe if they are resisting on their own that may happen. The groups are linked nationwide so they direct resources - people, money to where it is needed. If it is a political campaign you sign up for you would stump on behalf of a candidate in a vulnerable red state. If an issue they already have good picture of which senators are pro and against and efforts will be directed to bring the cons into the fold - like if it’s a bill I mean. So yes the very purpose of a group is to direct you to places and candidates that need help in the red states

After tough one week, everyone of you deserve to relax your mind a little. Each one of you may be struggling to accept the reality. If you feel like laughing a little, please read my latest snippet Inebriation

Did some reading on the Gamble case and though a lot depends on the scope and interpretation of the eventual verdict there might be a silver lining here. Gamble is a double jeopardy issue, meaning in order to be applicable the charges must be identical at the federal and state level. There is a possible workaround here. Mueller and the state AGs can simply charge Trump and his co-conspirators with slightly different variations of the crimes at a state level, or bring no charges at the federal level and leave the prosecution to the state, in which case double jeopardy will not apply.

No doubt the states are looking up all possible tactics in these cases. Democrats are slowly learning not to bring knives to a gunfight.

I guess I should have asked the question in two parts. I muddled up all my thoughts into one. One part is about finding ourselves, not just Indian origin folks but progressives in general, in a regressive neo-fascist/theocratic state. Not a full blown dystopia, a la Handmaid's tale, but in a state with regressive policies on women's rights, worker protections, gay rights, consumer protections, where state-sanctioned discrimination is the norm -- "We don't serve gays and muslims" type of situation. Right now a religious cake-maker is allowed to refuse service, soon a Catholic pharmacist will refuse to sell you birth control, and a fundamentalist teacher will refuse to teach evolution and climate change to our children. Not that it doesn't already happen but we have legal recourse, for now. McConnell's SCOTUS will change all that and for a good long while.

What will it take to start remedying the situation - legally, politically and socially? Will taking back the legislature stem the tide? Can a democratic legislature and executive stand up to a regressive judiciary? Are we looking at a new civil rights movement? Is it even possible to mobilize and protest at that scale in today's world? I realize these are very broad-ended questions, and not easily answerable. I'm not looking for a cut and dried answer, it's more of a thought exercise for myself. Just trying to wrap my mind around a scenario that longer seems as remote as it once did.
