It's amazing to see the high percentage of pesticide in cold drinks made for human consumption. I read a useful article recently which stared that n Indian tourist in Thailand ate Jack Fruit and soon after drank cola. This proved fatal and he died. Jack Fruit and cola must never be consumed together. So please beware.

In order to find relief in scorching heat its best to drink mineral water or lassi (chaas). Aerated drinks are not good for health. Juice packs from the supermarket look good and perhaps taste good but most of these have a high sugar content and must be avoided. If you are keen on fruit juice you must make fruit smoothies from seasonal fresh fruit at home.

Tried looking up on IMA website. The alleged report was/is not there.
    Then found this at
Pesticide Percentage(%) in cool drinks released from IMA | Sulekha Creative Inside Outside - Home And Garden Contest

    Then found a reference ontantrik-porter.blogspot.com/2006/09/ima-hoax-e-mail.html.

Apparently, the hoax post is circulating since before 2006. It's obviously hoax because:

    1. IMA doesn't do this kind of tests and no such report has been published by it.

    2. The data of 9.2% to 15.2% is simply untenable. The total pesticide residue (tpr) is usually given in ppb (parts per billion, 1 ppb = .001 mg/L) and the EU norms, which was adopted in the draft notification (never notified due to serious opposition) on the standard for India is 0.5 ppb for total pesticide residue and 0.1 ppb for individual pesticide residues. 9.2% type of tpr would probably prove almost fatal in most cases.

However, the incidence of dangerous excess of tpr is widely reported since 2003 and even the Joint Parliamentary Committee (http://parliamentofindia.nic.in/ls/jpc/JPC-Report.pdf), reported the following:

JOINT COMMITTEE ON PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN AND SAFETY STANDARDS FOR SOFT DRINKS, FRUIT JUICE AND OTHER BEVERAGES

    Report

    Para 1.96

The Committee, however, find that the CSE findings are correct on the presence of pesticide residues in carbonated water strictly in respect of the 36 samples of 12 brand names analyzed by them. The Committee also appreciate the whistle blowing act of CSE in alerting the nation to an issue with major implications to food safety, policy formulation, regulatory framework and human and environmental health.

    Para 2.170

The Committee note with deep concern that the soft drink (Carbonated water/Sweetened Aerated water) industry in India with an annual turnover of Rs. 6000 crores is unregulated. It is exempted from Industrial licensing under the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act, 1951 and gets a one time license to operate from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries under the Fruit Products Order (FPO), 1955 and a no objection certificate from the local government and the State Pollution Control Board.

    Para 2.175

Apart from these two mandatory regulations, there is also a voluntary specification of BIS for Carbonated beverages (IS 2346:1992). It specifies the quality of water to be used in the manufacturing of soft drinks which should meet the water quality standard for the processed food industry IS 4251:1967, which in turn specifies standards for bacteriological, physical and chemical tolerances but does not mention pesticides. It is only recently that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued notification No. GSR.554(E) Dated 18.7.2003 prescribing standards of 0.0001mg/litre for individual pesticides and 0.0005 mg/litre for total pesticides for the packaged drinking water which are in conformity with the standards of EU and these norms have already been enforced w.e.f. 1.1.2004. The packaged drinking water has also been brought under the definition of ‘Food’ in the year 2001. The same norms however, have been prescribed in the notification issued on 26.8.2003 for the soft drinks and other beverages on the plea that water is the main constituent in these. From the depositions made before the Committee by the CocaCola, Pepsico, Delhi Jal Board, Indian Bottled Water Manufacturers Association and a few others including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, it was made amply clear that it is not difficult to meet the new norms for water since most of the manufacturers have already installed the requisite equipment which is not very costly and they are already meeting the new standards. In fact the Bottled Water Manufacturers Association as well as the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, had also clarified that the processing charges involved in processing the water are almost negligible. The Committee were also informed by a number of experts that the technology for removing the pesticides fromwater already exists and these can be removed to any level.

It is unfortunate that such a serious matter hasn't been effectively addressed as yet. But let's not use hoaxes to fight a just cause!

What a nicely researched and response by dear @shobhamma . Thanks a lot.

Of course even if the %ges are hoax, but surely the fizzy drinks are health hazards in every way as pointed out by dear @jayasala42 mam particularly the large amount of sugar contained.

I am so shocked that India is among those countries which has least safety health controls on edibles and drinks offered to public consumption!

The cost for those lapse is and will be very very high.
