Before I got married I used to believe mom's are best would want everything best for you.
Post marriage, I see friends collegues aquitance saying should not stay at parents house too much, I was at parents place for almost 10 months after child birth.
Then here in USA I heard a friend saying her mom is totally changed, told me never to stay at parents place for more than 2 months ''mariyadhaya irukadhu", 'poaanuma vandhoama nnu irukkanum'. When she went to India.
I'm seeing some mom's are lil jealous if they see thier daughters or DILs don't have to go thru what they went. They keep telling in our times, daughters put up with it .DILs fight it out in many cases.

Dear Vedavalli,
you are correct.There are mothers who feel jealous of their own daughters/DIL or feel happy when they suffer.This may look contrary to the encomia paid to motherhood.But it is a reality.

Dear Shri Thyagarajan Sir,
On many occasions reality hurts, when it is far from ideal situation and very close to calamity.Even a psychiatrist or psycho analyst may not be able to cope with the situation. I too was reminded of''Ye tu Brute' while writing this.

Thank you for this story Jayasala, I sometimes think thank god that i don't have brothers, to bring in SIL, because I can't imagine how our mother could have treated them, after seeing how she treats my sister who stayed back to be with her after our father died. Sometimes it hurts, thinking why mom is like that. So I think all have another face than their usual, don't know when it will be exposed. Dear Mira,Thanks for the response.May be they behave like this because of insecurity. But how can a person already separated from her husband, wholly dependent, serving 24x7 tolerate the tortures.If any servant maid is placed in such a situation, she would simply leave the house.Here there was no escape for my sister.She had no go. Amma was fully aware of this and she could use her authority inspite of her biological challenges.The pity is no one ,including myself, was prepared to intervene, lest the situation became worse.On many occasions I used to think that keeping quiet when some atrocity is going on just before our eyes, is worse than being atrocious.

Human mind is very difficult to understand. Especially in old age , many people in late seventies undergo multiple health issues and take medicines for it. According to psychology their self esteem goes down . So they may criticise people around them , especially their care taker. We have elders in family in late eighties and early nineties. They are very strict and particular about everything. Sometimes critical and judgemental. Yes it is is not EASY, we feel hurt . But it is their inability at the age makes them behave that way. My mom says we don't know if we all would be alive at eighty or ninety. So we need to brush off their criticism and do our duty , one day they would understand our affection.

Shankara says ' unavoidable labour pains,tasteless tongue, thinning image,proximity to the child's excreta continuously for a year-For a mother who is able to put up with all these sufferings, what else other than a sincere prostration ( Namaskar) can be given by me in return?" says Acharya.

Mother also has a flipper side.some 15 years back I wrote about a real time experience and the same was published in a popular Women's magazine.Here it is:-

பச்சிளம் வயதில் தாயை இழந்தாய்.பாட்டியின் அரவணைப்பிலும்,ஏன் ,ஆதிக்கத்திலும் வளர்ந்தாய் .ஆறு வயதில் 15 வயது மூத்தவரான தாய் மாமனின் கரம் பிடித்தாய்.ஆணவப் பாட்டியின் மாமியார்க் கொடுமை,கூட்டுக குடும்பச் சூழல்,அடுப்புப் புகை,தினம் 2 மணி நேரம் ஆட்டுக்கல் அருகாமை.ஆறு பெண்களுக்குத் தாய்.
அம்மா, உன் பொறுமைக்கு ஈடில்லை,இணையில்லை.மூன்றாம் வகுப்புத் தாண்டாத உன் அறிவு த் திறமை அபாரம்.கணக்கு என்றால் உனக்கு உயிர்.உன்னுடைய யுக்திக் கணக்கெல்லாம் நம் வீட்டு மாட்டுக் கொட்டகையில் x ,y ஆகவும்,எண்களாகவும் உருப்பெறும் அழகைக் கண்டு அதிசயிக்காத நாளில்லை.நீ இயற்றிய பாட்டை அரங்கேற்றாத கோலாட்ட ஜோத்திரை இல்லை.

எல்லா பெண்களுக்கும் இயன்றவரையில் தகுதிக் கேற்ற மாப்பிள்ளை பார்த்துப் பொன் வைக்கும் இடத்தில் பூ வைத்தாலும், பார்த்துப் பார்த்துப் பாங்காக செய்வாயே ,அம்மா .ஒவ்வொரு பெண்ணும் 4,5 பிரசவங்களுக்குப் பிறந்தகம் வரும்போது ,பத்திய சமையல் செய்து போட்டு,இளம் குழந்தையைக் குளிப்பாட்டி,சாம்பிராணி போட்டு, உரை மருந்து புகட்டி!அப்பப்பா!பொறுமையின் சிகரமம்மா நீ!
அப்பாவின் வயது 85.உன் வயது 70.திண்ணையில் படுத்திருந்த அப்பா திடீரென்று கை , கால் செயலிழந்து விட்டார் .இரண்டு ஆண் டுகள் ஓடி விட்டன. இடி போன்ற மற்றொரு செய்தி.உனது அருமந்த மாப்பிள்ளைகளுள் ஒருவர் எதோ சிக்கலில் மாட்டிக் கொண்டு,வேலை இழக்க, கோமு அக்காவும் நான்கு குழந்தைகளும் பிறந்த வீட்டில் தஞ்சம்.ஒரு பாடாகக் குழந்தைகளை உள்ளூர்ப் பள்ளியில் சேர்த்தாயிற்று.

ஒரு நாள் 'கை வலி 'என்று படுத்த நீயும் பாரிச வாயு நோயினால் முழுமையாக பாதிக்கப் பட்டாய்.கோமுவுக்கு நீ தஞ்சம் அளித்தாய்.இப்போது கோமு அக்கா தான் உனக்கு எல்லாம்.காலை 5 மணி முதல் இரவு 10 மணி வரை அக்காவுக்கு ஓயாத வேலை.ஏழு பேருக்கு சமைத்து,குழந்தைகளுக்கு, டிபன் பாக்ஸ் கட்டி,அப்பா,அம்மாவைக் குளிப்பாட்டி, அவர்களுக்கு உணவு அளித்து,முக்கியமாக அவர்களது இயற்கை உபாதைகளுக்கான எல்லா வசதிகளையும் செய்தாள் .வேலைக்காரர்களை நியமிக்கும் பண வசதி இல்லை.தன் அவல நிலையை எண்ணி எண்ணி நொந்து நூலானாள்.

ஆனால், அம்மா, நீ என்ன செய்தாய் ?வருவோர் போவோரிடம் எல்லாம் கோமு அக்காவைப் பற்றி புகார் சொன்னாய்.மூன்று மாதத்துக்கு ஒரு முறை ஏதாவது ஒரு பெண் பெற்றோரைக் காண வருவாள்.அம்மாவிடம் உட்கார்ந்து சாவகாசமாக வாய் வார்த்தை பேச அவர்களால் முடியும்.அவர்கள் அனைவரிடமும் 'கோமு சரியாகக் கவனிக்க வில்லை.முகம் கொடுத்துப் பேசுவதில்லை 'என்று ஏகப் பட்ட புகார். வந்தவர் எல்லோரும் போகிற போக்கில் கோமு அக்காவை ஏசி விட்டு இலவச உபதேசங்களை டன் கணக்கில் உதிர்த்து விட்டுப் போவார்கள்.
தன் குழந்தைகளின் கெஞ்சல்களையும், பசியையும் கூட பொருட்படுத்தாமல், தஞ்சம் அடைந்த இடத்துக்கு முழு விசுவாசமாக இருக்க வேண்டுமென்ற ஒரே நோக்கத்துடன் தன்னை அர்ப்பணித்தாள் கோமு அக்கா.

தினமும் மல, மூத்திரம்
சு த்தம் செய்து,உடம்பைத் துடைப்பது என்பது எவ்வளவு அருவருப்பான செயல் என்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாதா ? அவளும் நீங்கள் பெற்ற பெண் தானே ?ஒருவருக்கு வறிய நிலை ஏற்படும்போது வெந்த புண்ணில் வேல் பாய்ச்சலாமா ? இன்னும் எவ்வளவோ கேட்க வேண்டுமென்று மனது துடித்தாலும் பெற்ற தாயைக் கேட்கத் துணிவில்லை. பயமா, தயக்கமா -தெரியவில்லை.அக்கா
வும் கேட்க விடவில்லை.

அம்மா தானே, உரிமையில் திட்டுகிறாள் என்பதே கோமு அக்காவின் பதில் .நானும் ஓரிரு நாட்கள் அங்கே வந்ததுண்டு. அக்காவுக்கு உதவி செய்ய முற்பட்ட போதெல்லாம் 'எல்லாம், அவள் பார்த்துப்பாள் .நீ இருப்பதே இரண்டு நாள். என்னிடம் சாவகாசமாகப் பேசி விட்டுப் போ.' இது அம்மாவின் வேண்டுகோள். நாள் தோறும் பணிவிடை செய்பவரை விட என்றோ ஒரு நாள் அரட்டை அடிப்பவர் முக்கியமாகி விட்டார்களா, அம்மா.
எல்லோர் முன்னிலையிலும் நீ ஏளன வார்த்தைகளை அள்ளி வீசிய போது துடித்துப் போவாள், அக்கா.கொல்லைப் புறம் தோய்க்கும் கல்லில் உட்கார்ந்து மருகுவாள்.உடனே அம்மா குரல் கொடுப்பாள்.அம்மாவின் இயற்கை உபாதையைத் தீர்க்கும் பணி அழைக்கும்.இது தான் தனக்கு விதிக்கப் பட்டது என்பது போல,ஒரு நாள் அல்ல,இரண்டு நாள் அல்ல,12 வருடம் ஓடாய்த் தேய்ந்தாள் .
அம்மா, அப்பா இறைவனடி சேர்ந்தனர். கோமு அக்காவும் கடைசி வரை உழைத்து விட்டுப் போய்ச்
சேர்ந்தாள் .
தகுந்த தருணத்தில் கோரப் படாத நீதி மறுக்கப்பட்ட நீதி தான்.எனினும் இன்றுதான் உன்னைக் கேட்கும் துணிவு வந்தது.இன்று உன் நினைவு நாள்.உன்னுடைய அறிவுக் கூர்மை, சலியாத உழைப்பு மட்டுமல்ல. அக்காவை நீ படுத்திய பாடும் மனதில் ஆழமாகப் பதிந்து விட்டது.

இந்த உலகில் தவறு செய்யும் தாய்மார்கள் அநேகர் இருக்கின்றனர்.அதிகப் பாசத்தினாலோ, அதிக கண்டிப்பினாலோ, முன்னேற்ற வெறியாலோ செய்யப் படும் தவறுகள் அவை .ஆனாலும், அம்மா, நீ புத்திக் கூர்மையும்
,விவேகமும் ஒருங்கிணைந்தவள் அல்லவா ?நீ செய்யும் செயல் ஒவ்வொன்றும் அப்பழுக்கு இல்லாதவை என்று பாராட்டு பெற்றவள் நீ.

'அண்டி வந்தால் இளக்காரம் ' என்று நீயுமா நினைத்தாய் ?எண்ணி எண்ணி பார்க்கிறேன்.தாய்மை
யின் மறு பக்கம் இது தானா ?
உடல் நிலை தளர்ச்சி அடையும்போது சுயநலம் மேலோங்கித் தாய்ப் பாசத்தின் ஊற்றுக் கண் முழுவதும் அடைபட்டு விடுமா ?
தாய்மையும் வெறுப்பு வசப் பட்டுத் தடுமாறி சறுக்கி விழுந்து விடுமா?-அதுவும் ஒருதலைப் பட்சமாக ?
காய்ச்சல் அனலாகக் காய்ந்தபோது,ஒரு நாள் அக்கா தாமதமாக எழுந்தபோது 'எல்லாம் பாசாங்கு. உடம்புக்கு என்ன கேடு?கட்டின புருஷன் கஞ்சி ஊற்றாவிட்டாலும் இங்கு மூணு வேளையும் கொட்டிக் கொள்வதில்
குறைச்சலில்லை 'என்று சூடு சொற்களை அள்ளி வீசினாயே அம்மா ?
ஏன் அம்மா, நீ மாறினாய் ?சின்ன வயதில் தாயை இழந்த நீ தாய்மையைப் பற்றி எப்படியெல்லாம் எங்களுக்கு அறிவுறுத்தி இருக்கிறாய் ?ஆதி சங்கரரின் 'மாத்ரு பஞ்சகம் ' பற்றி அணு அணுவாக விளக்கம் தருவாயே அம்மா ?
ஒரு ஸ்லோகம்.
ஆஸ் தாம் தாவதியம் 'என்று ஆரம்பிக்கும்.
சங்கரர் கூறுகிறார்
"தடுக்க முடியாத பிரசவ வேதனை,ருசியற்ற நாக்கு,இளை த்த உடல்,ஒரு வருட கால மல மூத்திரம் நிறைந்த அருகாமை-இந்த கஷ்டங்களை எல்லாம் தாங்கி கொள்ளும் தாய்க்கு நமஸ்கரிப்பதைத் தவிர வேறு என்ன கைம்மாறு செய்ய முடியும் ?'
ஆதி சங்கரர் கூறியது ஓர் ஆண்டு.கோமு அக்கா உனக்கு செய்த சிசுருஷை 12 வருஷம்.தொண்டு செய்யும் மகளும் தாய்க்குச் சமம் என்பது நீ அறியாதது அல்ல.
அம்மா, எவ்வளவு உயர்ந்த நிலையிலிருந்த நீ ஏன் அடிமட்டத்துக்குத் தள்ளப் பட்டாய் ?

தான் பெற்ற பெண் படும் வேதனைதான் எதிர்மறை எண்ணங்களாய் உருப் பெற்றதா?
பாசமும் நேசமும் கூட நீசத் தனமாய் வெளிப் படுவதுண்டா ?
சுய தேவைகளுக்கு கூட பிறரை நம்ப வேண்டியதனால் ஏற்பட்ட சுய பச்சாதாபம் வெறுப்பாய் மாறியதா ?
தாய்மையும் முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட இரு பக்கங்கள் அடங்கிய நாணயம் போன்றது தானா ?
அம்மா, அக்கா நம் வீட்டுக்கு வருவதற்கு முன் நீ ஒரு முறை என்னிடம் கூறியது நன்றாக நினைவில் உள்ளது.
" பார்வை மங்க மங்க, நாவில் ருசி குறைய குறைய,சருமம் சுருங்க சுருங்க,
அஹங்காரம்மறையணும்அரவணைப்பு மலரணும்
இறுமாப்பு மறையணும்
இங்கிதம் வளரணும்
எடுத்தெறிதலும் ஏசுதலும்
மறைந்து ஏற்பு நிறையணும்
கோபமெல்லாம் போய்
கனிவு கொ ழிக்கணும் "
என்று அடுக்கு மொழியில் எல்லா முதியவர்களுக்கும் பொதுவான அறிவுரை வழங்கினாயே,அம்மா, அது உனக்குப் பொருத்தமற்றது என்று நீ நினைத்தாயா ?

அம்மா, உன் கடைசி நாள் எனக்கு நன்றாக நினைவு இருக்கிறது.நீ கோமு அக்காவைக் கூப்பிட்டு அருகில் அழைத்து,அவள் கன்னங்களை வருடிக் கொடுத்தாய்;எதோ சொல்ல நினைத்தாய்;வார்த்தைகள் வெளி வரவில்லை;உனது இரு சொட்டு க் கண்ணீர் அக்காவின் புடவையில் விழுந்தது.
இந்த கண்ணீர்தான் உனது பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டு திட்டு, வசவுகளுக்கெல்லாம் பிராயச்சித்தமா? உனது கடைசி யாத்திரைக்கு இந்த கண்ணீரை யாத்ரா தானம் செய்தாயா ?
அந்த இரண்டு சொட்டு கண்ணீருக்கு எவ்வளவோ அர்த்தங்கள்!
நீ, உயிரோடு இருந்திருந்தால் அம்மா,உன் வாக்கு வன்மையால் இந்த கண்ணீரையே காவியம்
ஆக்கி இருப்பாய்!
எந்த அளவுக்கு மனதை சமாதானம் செய்து கொண்டாலும் ,மனித இயல்பு என்று ஒதுக்கித்த தள்ளினாலும் என்னால் இந்த அம்மாவை முழுமையாக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியவில்லையே அம்மா.
என் செய்வேன் அம்மா !
வெள்ளைத் தாளில் ஒரு கரும் புள்ளியா ?
அம்மா, நீயுமா !!
