How are you? hope everything is going smooth in your life.

As far as I know Moolamantras has to be given by guru before testing your sincerity and devotion. If the mantras are moola mantas / beeja mantras you can chant for your self.

I know incident where the sacrifice for mantra has not done properly and the family is in trouble.

 

I dont know what is moola / beeja mantras

I read it some where that chanting garbhadakshayani strotas would be helpful. So I thought I can give a try. But my mother recently heard that any mantra without taking from Guru initiation is not so useful

Moola-beeja mantras are sanskrit mantras with powerful sequences of letters designed to get specific results.
I dont think moola mantras are available freely where we can chant for ourself. It has to initiated by guru and also needs special niyamas
Aiyyappa deeksh for 41 days is best example to say

 

So... I think am not suppose to do the mantra parayan

 

with out gurus initiation
