In the early weeks of pregnancy your body will release two hormones – progesterone and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
Progesterone
Progesterone helps your uterus grow and keeps it from contracting. In the past few years, doctors have often prescribed progesterone shots to those who have had miscarriages in the past. it is also given to those who have a short cervix or have had preterm births before. The shots are usually given between the 16th and 20th weeks of pregnancy and thereafter continue weekly till the 37th week.
HCG
HCG is used mainly to cause ovulation and to treat infertility in women. However, once you are pregnant then avoid taking these shots as it can lead to birth defects in the child. As a side effect, some women have developed what is known as the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).Some of the symptoms of OHSS are less urination, shortness of breath, sever pelvic pain and swelling in the hands and legs. It usually happens after the first shot itself. If you notice any such symptom, do report to your doctor immediately.
