We often read about CEO's of tech and other companies receiving huge amounts of money, and also golden parachutes, even if the company is doing not so great. Shareholders can have heartburn and caustic comments as the CEO ends up with of money while they lose their investment etc. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is supposed to have earned $114 million in her 4 years as Yahoo CEO (cash, shares, gains on stock options exercised). She has options to buy more stock and may also receive around $55 million if she quits Yahoo after its acquisition by Verizon. Since this is a high profile female CEO, I was more interested in the details and did some reading. Was wondering: Do the CEO's deserve such high compensation when they leave a company in such a state? Is the hard work they put in, and the expertise they bring, worth that much money?
That has how it turned out to be, yes. But question is whether they deserve the huge compensations they negotiate before they start the job. I guess yes.. because if not, companies will not attract the talent they need. Maybe, at that level, such a failure matters more to the person than the millions. After $75K, it is all extra, isn't it, according to some happiness survey!
I think that with respect to persons in such high-up roles, especially in corporate giants, it is more of how they add to the brand value and what they have done in their previous jobs. They are able to command more because of that. We all know that beyond a certain point in the management hierarchy, the members are shockingly overpaid. Moreover, there are some cases where a change in the leadership has turned the company around.
