Worried!!Dark green stool, occult blood +ve with rbc 2-3 hpf in 5 month old baby :((

Hi,
My DS has just completed 5 months now.. He is passing dark green stools for the last 3.5 months.. Tried different medicines like econorm, enterogermina, lactieviest, cefixime, taxim etc.. but it dint clear up..
He passes stool once or twice a day.. Stool is semi solid and very dark green in colour.. Stool test showed occult blood positive with rbc 2-3 hpf.. We are giving him lactogen 1.. Doc prescribed zanocin 50mg syrup (8ml per day in two doses) for 7 days.. His anus is looking little reddish..
Can anybody tell me what may be the reason for this dark green color stools??
Doctor is saying that its due to infection.. but after trying cefixime, taxim also color is not changing..
Plz help..
The presence of red blood cells in stool is making me scary..

No..only lactogen1.. and a little Breast milk..

I know any formula that contains high amount if iron can cause this green stools. Does the lactogen bottle label say anything about it?

Hi,
my son passes green stools too.i did mention to pead, they said it will clear up on its own..unless it smells its not infection.
he caughtcold at 3 months..aftr that green stools started till now he is 6.1/2
so doc sa ys no issue at all he has more gut moment thats it.
he is ebf.

Hi Gae3,
Is your son passing stool in very dark green color?? Did u try giving any antibiotics for that?Did u test his stool for infection?Are you giving him only breast milk or formula? Since he is now 6.5 months, did u start giving solids??

Hi OP,

1. I too agree with Rakhi. Green color stools is because of iron content in the formula milk (lactogen).

2. For your child reddish color bottom, are u regularly applying nappy rash cream? For my son coconut oil works better than rash cream. Generously apply pure coconut oil all the reddish area , 2 -3 times.

3. Change diaper and wash or wipe bottom with water, as soon as possible, after he passes stools. If infection is there in the stomach babies get horrible diaper rash too,
The stools mixed with urine causes bad rash.

4. check if he has digestion problem, then dilute little bit than the suggested water content for the formula milk.

5. try different brand of milk, if you think milk is the problem.

If occult blood is positive then it means baby is lactose intolerant. Any regular milk based formula's will cause allergic reaction in the body. Infection could be the result of the allergic reaction too.

Try changing to non-milk based formula.
