The Women's Reservation Bill is likely to be taken up in the Budget Session of Parliament due to commence shortly. Although most women straightaway welcome the initiative, I find it difficult to have answers to the following issues:

    1. Does prescription of quota or reservation constitute the only desirable/ effective solution to meet the objective of empowerment of vulnerable sections?

    2. How has the reservation policy worked to serve the purpose of empowerment wherever it has been used for a considerable period of time? Especially how has it worked in the case of Gram Panchayars?

    3. Parliament being the basic institution of of our polity, should not the system so oriented that only the most suitable persons with proven contribution to society, experience, perspective and proper outlook, reach it?

    4. Does reservation of seats for women in Parliament, State Assemblies, Panchayati Raj institutions would as such promote the real cause of women?

    5. Would it not be a better option to insist on and encourage women who take to public life in stages prior to seeking elections as people's representatives to such bodies and simultaneously insulate the system of elections from use of money and muscle power?

    6. Does women reservation compromise with their dignity as equal beings to menfolk?

I shall appreciate if those who have given thought to the issue of women's reservation share their views here.

Well i Dont want reservation for woman in any field not just in politics
They can even come up in open competition
and let them prove to the male dominant society
woman doesn't needs sympathy but empathy
    and woman are not backward
They will take equal chance along with men
ofcourse they have problem when compared to men they need to work twice for achieving something
but this system will only show the world she is backward and system will criticize that because of the reservation they won

    just told my views

    cheers

Well what can i say majority here is women so they might want.
But frankly they already provided lot of reservations and facilities of women now 50% is too much in my view.

    Mr. Rajesh,
Although the majority here is that of the women, but their views need not alewaus be biased by gender considerations; you can trust the objectivity of their judgement and independence of their opinion on the issue (like the first respondent has done).

I think women's quota should be there as women still don't get a fair chance in this country. Most people either don't think that a woman should be at a top position or don't want them to progress.

This type of mentality is deep rooted in Indian male psychy and they do everything possible to make sure that everybody else thinks the same way. A guy fighting elections only has to fight his opposition, but a woman running in an election has to fight with opposition, men from her own party, social backward thinking and her own family.

So, I think the quota should be there for at least few years. Let women prove themselves, then they can remove it.

Ok just answer one single question of mine
"Are woman who are really backward going to utilize this reservation?"
I can say a big NO will be the answer

The woman who did not have problems with society, who are very much educated and who have lot of oppurtunities and who are very bold. These sort of woman are the ones who are going to utilize it. Not a backward woman...

This is really a good topic. Firstly the reservation for women was considered based on many important facts. Lets take an example of RTC buses. In all the buses i have boarded, i have seen it written with a Bold Red ink "LADIES". Inspite of that i see Ladies standing and Men sitting in Ladies reserved seat. In such circumstances Do you think any women will get a chance to be seated in the bus if there were no reservations. Take another example to Paying E-bills, Phone bills etc. If there was no separate queue for ladies, do you think it would have been easy for so many ladies to go and pay the Bills.

Lets Forget the matter of education. Because Women have already proved that , they stand equal to men in almost all the fields.Take the example of Proffessional entrance Exams like Eamcet, ICET, IIT etc etc. There are lots of examples of women who got through MERIT.

But i definitely feel that the concept of Reservation will help many backward/rural class people who feel that it is not so important for a girl to get Highly educated.

Not all women might need reservation, but if some are getting benefitted with that concept, then i would surely support the Reservation For Women.

    Rekha

rekha the thing is males do sit in seats reserved for us..but why cant you call the conductor and make them get up from their seat?? know what? i have seen woman even making the bus stop till this issue is over and then only after they get their seat they will let the driver put his hands over steering..

and dear even about education eamcet has reservation that is the reason you see girls here and there. And in IITs very less girls get a seat..you can just ask any one from IIT how well would be the ratio of girls to boys..very less number of girls..they score well in public exams and all but coming to competitive exams they are still way behind..I am not criticizing but I am speaking facts..and know what if the person is not intelligent enough to score so well..

and always urban woman are the one who take advantage of this reservation.. a really backward woman is still somewhere at home cleaning utensils or cooking for the home..

    Aparjitha,

Its true that the mostly urban women will take advantage of this reservation, but they also need reservation. Just because they live in a city and are educated that does not mean that they don't get discriminated against.
