Pre-marital counseling may help in that both parties are made aware what they are getting into; what problems they can expect etc., And perhaps even give an undertaking akin to pre-nups on how they propose to address the likely irritants that may crop up in their partnered lives.

Earlier everything was a given in the prevalent strong patriarchal system, Now that women are more outspoken suitable amendments must be envisaged before getting into any long-term relationship.

Yes, this is how the world seems to be shaping up eventually. True lovers need have no marriage contracts. But who trusts this love?

If we can treat sex as any other normal human need, which BTW it really is, there would not have been any need for marriage and there would have been just polyamorous relationships with kids looked after by their natural families.

I have seen instances where the widow returns to her mom's family with her young ones and her brothers and uncles or other relatives chip-in.
The same thing will happen if marriages disappear.

The real problem is we marry with many complex expectations that weren't there in earlier generations. We live in a highly materialistic and westernized environment. Marriage today is more of a legal contract (and less of a sacred commitment) with many unwritten expectations built into it. Somehow no one has thought about failure (in fulfilling expectations) and the remedies for any shortcomings in the relationship. Divorce may be morally valid only in extreme cases.

Also spouses can divorce when one of them is seriously ill or suffers financially or any other reasons though no fault of the individual. This may be legal all the way but morally unsustainable.

Else see the brighter side as Socrates puts it:
By all means, marry. If you get a good wife (spouse), you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
