Hi elza and other IL's You will get the kalchatti @ kumbakonam. some of the places in thanjavur also.
Thanks everybody for the responses. Now I atleast know some places (Trichy srirangam temple, Palakkad kalpathi during nov, kumbakonam and thanjavur) where I can get kalchatti. I'm not sure I'l be going to these places any time soon. But I'l remember and will let everybody know if I get a chance to go there and buy it. And cindhuja, I'l definitly keep track of this thread.
Hi Elza I use a kalchatti for spinach etc. They used to be available in chennai Parrys area near a very famous mariamman temple . Allthe best and hope you find it. I use one even today and treasure it too. Jayashree
Hi Elza, I read this thread only now. Kalchatti is available in Zambazaar(Pycrofts Road) where they sell pots. Suguna
Hi Nithya, Kalchatti is used when you want prepare KeeraiKadayal wherein you mix keerai and dal. You also need Mathu to grind them.Grinding Keerai and Dal in Kalchatti will increase the taste like anything. You will never get the same taste when you grind the same with mixer. Suguna
Not only for spinach..For regular process of making dal too , start using this ..Sure you'll find a difference in taste...Do not cover tightly instead allow dal to cook in open or covered 3/4th and mash with wooden dal churner ...Sambar flavour is like :crazy
Hey kalchatti lovers, Include me too . We use kalchatti to store spinach koottu, spinach kuzhambu, dals, curd, milk,Mango pickle(home made),any koottu, vaththa kuzhambu, garlic rasam etc. All the dishes will be because of kalchatti. I got it in my hometown, kumbakonam.
hello all, could anyone please clear my doubts on using kalchatti? 1. How to start using a new kalchatti 2. Can the cooked food be stored in kalchatti or must be transfered to any other vessel? 3. How to clean the kalchatti after cooking. Thanks, Deepa.
Deepa, It is just an ordinary cooking vessel made out of stone It is not a canister to store, so once you are done , as always transfer the content to some other vessel I don't think it requires any prior process before usage..Only clay-pots are of that category..Will clarify and let you all know We clean it with the regular scrubber and dish washing liquid (no extra efforts) Attached are samples of kalchatti....but what we get in south are black/grey in color mostly rather than white
