Here is an interesting philosophical knowledge from the great "Manu Smriti" a text on law of Societal Living.. (These are the views given during a one on one Satsang by my boss :p)

    Hindhu philosophy speaks about "Chaturashramam"-
THE CHATURASHRAMA: 4 stages of Life
    1.Brahmacharya (Up-till 24yrs of age)
    2.Grihastha (24-48yrs of age)
    3.Vanaprastha (48-72yrs of age)
    4.Sannyasa (72yrs-demise)

When you understand the logic behind this you will more or less realize that it is not just philosophy, but there WAS so much of practicality in it!

    >BRAHMACHARYA: the essence of which can be considered as focus on goal...i.e. gaining knowledge in various domains...this happens till 24 yrs of age...

    >GRIHASTHA STAGE: the marriage, children, family building, householder responsibilities are met and experienced with utmost care..a person in this stage is responsible for the other 3 stages as well it is stated...

    >VANAPRASTA STAGE: From 48 till 72 ---IS NOT GOING INTO FOREST!!!---
having sloughed many years and completed the house holder responsibilities in the previous stage, one can now be laid back and involve in holy pilgrimages and gaining experiences through these travels to be shared back home along with house hold expertise shared with the younger family members…

    >SANNYASA STAGE: From 72 to demise- It is …Based deeply on hindu philosophy, the aged persons are required to dwell deep into their personal Spiritual Journeys for a better rebirth, stay in ashrams meant for such learning purposes, listen to teachings of Gurus, priests, sadhus and get closer to their Ishtadevatha as a part of the souls journey..

    THUS, To apply...
In Householder stagemarriage according to the text happens at 24 resulting in sort of an immediate childbirth...? When one turns 48, house-holder stage ends and Vanaprastha stageStarts...
To count back, the child-parent age difference would be approx. 24-25yrs...
Thus when one moves into Vanaprastha Stage, once child would have completed Brahmacharya and entered the Grihasthashrama!!!

And Voila! Its is a cycle!
One set would start family, next set would go off on Holy Pilgrimage Journeys, and the next set into Spiritual Journey!

    >Privacy for the young couple- Check
    >Older couple get the much deserved vacation after
sloughing years as a house holder- Check
    >No nagging from in laws- Check
    >Phases of grandparent-grandchildren bonding- Check

So this means....It is a Joint Family with lot of Nuclear Phases....??
What a balance that seemed like to the great Sage Manu!

Now I am sure, this frame work was drawn by him keeping the MALE child family in mind!!!! And thats why the preference of a male child in those times!
After all it was purely a Mans World back then!!! ;-)

I wonder how we can modify and apply his laws in the current times...
Would it then solve a couple of the Vital In-law Vs In-law issues?
