Infidelity or Extramarital affair is a BIG thing. It may or may not be a deal-breaker, but it's definitely a deal-changer. A marriage may survive an EMA, but it will never be the same again. It changes everything.

    Nice question!!!

Reason to be in marriage - love, trust, understanding, respect, willingness to compromise for partner, and KIDS.

Reason to be out of marriage - Infidelity (certainly), disrespect or constant criticism, distrust, any kind of abuse, jealousy, and MONSTER INLAWS.

You've described such a truly tragic situation. I totally agree, in this case the relationship is long over.

@anika987, I'm with you on this. Personally, EMA would be absolutely unforgivable.

I see posts on IL recommending reconciliation and I'm hoping someone will post and shed some light on this other point of view.

    Very well said.

I totally understand why women put up with all kinds of horrible marriages in the past. But why do they do it today? And not just in India.

I'm sorry someone close to you is in a painful situation, I hope it is resolved soon. What you are describing is fraud and misrepresentation - marriage without full disclosure starts with deceit and can only go downhill from there.

To say "love is everything" is very valid for many, myself included. :)

But this can't be a universal criterion - especially since many marriages are arranged and love needs a chance to grow. Reminds me of this song from Fiddler on the Roof: Do you love me?
