I can give you basic knowledge on how to identify different type of fabrics by visually and with the hand feel.
I think this will help you to some extent to identify fabrics when buying.
Cotton - Generally dull in appearance but can be lustrous once starched. Feels smooth and soft to touch. Gives cool feeling. Ideal for Summer. Wrinkles easily
Linen - Low to medium luster. Soft and smooth texture. wrinkles easily.
Jute - Dull look. Rough and hairy texture. Gives warm and rough feeling.
Wool - medium or low luster. soft and smooth also bulky to look at. Gives warm look.
Silk - Have more luster. Delicate looking. Smooth, soft and light.
Rayon - Can be lustrous or without it. Soft and shiny but heavier than silk. Gives cool look.
Synthetic fabrics - Can be dull, semi dull or lustrous. Heat sensitive and melt on application of heat. Do not wrinkle easily. ( Crepe, Georgette, Chiffon, acrylic, nylon, spandex etc....
Hope the above info would be helpful to you....
