Few Months back i was in your situation looking for attractions as my parents were visiting us . these are the places we found.

1.The pentagon
2. US Capitol Building
3. washington monument
4. world war 2 memorial
5. thomas jefferson memorial
6. Lincoln memorial.
7. Vietnam veterans memorial
8.Smithsonian Institute of museums
9. white house

it all depends on how early we start off to visit all places in one day .
still ahead is the most attractive part the "cherry blossom festival" to start from march 27th to april 11th 2010,.
