I think it depends on the person you were with. If your friend feels hurt and thinks you’re rude then that’s all you need to know.

If my friend spends her time reading on her phone, I would feel ignored. No matter who is sitting at our table, I am sure we’ll be able to find general topics to talk about during our lunch date.
