Hello, My friend is visiting India for the first time with her 2 year old toddler and stay there for couple of months. The baby is current on all vaccinations except BCG. Is it necessary to give the baby BCG too as soon as they land there? Some people are advising for it, as TB is quite prevalent in India and some are saying, it is not required as the baby is grown up. She is quite confused. Also, what will be the side effects, if she decides to go for the vaccination? Thanks so much!
As per a leading paed in Chennai: BCG vaccination protects only against TB meningiis and Disseminated TB;Because the incidence of TB is higher here,it 's recommended here.May not be necessary for short term visits; If you still want to get it done,a mantoux test prior to administration of BCG should be done and should be negative Here means India.
She should check with her pediatrician. Vaccines come with their own risk. So its better to consult the dr before making decision.
Thanks Ramya! We were not aware that a Mantoux test was necessary for a baby before vaccination. Will check on that. Thank you!
Thanks Rohini. The doctor who used to be my friend's pediatrician is strongly suggesting that they should get the baby vaccinated as soon as they land there. They will be checking with more doctors just for a second opinion.
