Asalamualaikum...May peace be upon you ! RAMADAN Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar, which lasts 29 or 30 days according to the visual sightings of the crescent moon.It is Islamic month of fasting, in which Muslims refrain from dawn until sunset from eating, drinking,physical relationships with their spouses and all types of sins. Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection and worship.The month of Ramadan is that in which the glorious Quran was revealed; a guidance for mankind. Salmaan (RA) reports, "On the last day of Sha-baan Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) addressed us and said, '0 people there comes over you now a great month,a most blessed month in which lies a night more greater in virtue than a thousand months of worship. It is a month in which Allah has made Fasting compulsory by day. And has made sunnah the Taraaweeh by night. Whosoever intends drawing near to Allah by performing any virtuous deed, for such person shall be the reward like the one who had performed a fardh(obligatory) in any other time. And whoever performs a fardh, shall be blessed with the reward of seventy faraa-idh in any other time.(Hadith) Fasting the whole month of Ramadan is compulsory upon every Muslim, male or female.Those who are sick, elderly, or on a journey, and women who are pregnant or nursing are permitted to break the fast and make up an equal number of days later in the year. If they are physically unable to do this, they must feed a needy person for every day missed. Children begin to fast (and to observe the prayer) from puberty, although many start earlier. O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn self-restraint. Quran,2:183 But if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew. Quran,2:184 This is a month, the first ten days of which brings Allah's mercy, the middle 10 days of which brings His forgiveness and the last of which brings emancipation from the Hell fire. (Hadith) There is night in the month of Ramadan which is better than thousand months of worship. This night is called Laitatul-Qadr or Shab-e-Qadr. And Allaah says in the Quran: “Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree). And what will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is? The Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allaah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months). Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel/Gabriel)] by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees, Through out that night, there is peace and goodness from Allaah to His believing slaves until the appearance of dawn” 97:1-5 Don't Miss Ramadan's First Night The first night of Ramadan is singled out with particular virtues.Ramadan's first night is blessed with great favors of Allah for a divine wisdom that HE, Almighty, knows.So, we should not miss it. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "When the first night of Ramadan comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are put in chains, and the gates of hell are closed, none of them remains open. The gates of heaven are opened and none of them remains closed. And a caller calls, "O seeker of goodness, come forward, and O seeker of evil, desist. And Allah has many (in this month) who will be freed from Hell.' This announcement is made every night." (At-Tirmidhi) This is the time when Muslims all over the world try to (and should) slow down from worldly affairs and focus on Repentance,self-reformation, spiritual cleansing and enlightenment; this is to establish a link between themselves and God through prayer, Remembrance of Allah, supplication, charity, good deeds and kindness. And glorify the praises of your Lord, before the rising of the sun and before its setting. And during a part of the night, glorify His praises, and after the prayers. Quran 50:39,40 May Almighty Allah bless us all with His favors and blessings. May He guide us to what is best in this world and the world to come...Aameen ! {compiled from various sources}
